Someone has been directed to fire an employee who has been with the company for more than 40 years. The order is from top management and this person is wondering how to do this. Is there any procedure for the summary disengagement of someone in their 60s who seems to have spent all their working life in the company?

Sentiments and business don't mix. If his conscience is bothering him maybe he should find out why such a long standing employee is summarily fired... just like that. Maybe he was stealing big time for yearsssss.

The person should not let them use him. To management can fire him/her if they so wish. It is obvious the firing is unjust and they are only trying to pin it on this overzealous staff.
If they could manage him for 40 years and you inherited the staff that way, let the staff be. Don't be used as a tool for destruction to reap the staff of his benefits.

Only Europeans should handle corporate entities.

My mother worked for Lever brothers (current Unilever), I still remember the party that was organised for her after ten years of service. The certificate of recognition is still with her to date.

I still remember the monthly benefits she received while working with them( staff always got a share of every product o the company).

I still remember her severance package when she resigned.

Now blacks are at the helms of affairs, the story has changed unsurprisingly.

I totally agree with this submission, and like its stated here, hope he/she is not being disengaged for serious offence.. There is one happening where i am now, man had put in 22 years of loyalty and services. Infact, he's the longest serving staff after the CEO... 2 years ago he tender a resignation letter, he wanted to relocate back to the village and set up a small poultry farm as he's now 60 yrs. He was ask not to go, that his services is still much needed so he stays.. So he jettisoned d idea. 2 years after, he got a letter that the resignation letter he submitted then which was not accepted has now been accepted and he's relieved.. He has not committed any offence. He cried to me. He had no plan. He kept asking what is he going to do now? When he had plan, he was told to wait! I ask him to chin up but within me, i wept! I wept because we are all in this race together. Its the realities of corporate life.
This our daddys in their 60s no try, stay in a comfort zone for more than 20 years. Aba. That’s not being visionary

Hiring and firing are realities of corporate life.

Nonetheless, those companies and managers that understand the importance of human resources will always endeavour to treat their workers with dignity, courtesy and consideration, even when they have to let them go.

Thus, the manager or supervisor who has been given the assignment to fire this long-serving worker should endeavour to do the following:

1. Convince management to give some time/funds to prepare the staff for the disengagement e.g. by arranging a pre-retirement course for the staff.

2. Ensure that the staff is given a letter of disengagement that highlights the worker's positive contributions during his years of service, and that expresses appreciation for same.

3. Convince management to provide a disengagement package (golden handshake) for the staff, in addition to his normal disengagement package.

4. If possible, arrange a send-forth outing for the staff.

Of course, the above only applies if the staff was a loyal and diligent staff who is not being disengaged for a serious offence!
Don't be overzealous ooo. Why did they manage him for that many years? You did not hire him, he's likely been with them before you were born so why can't management fire him?

All these steps na inexperience they cause an and that is what they are leveraging on.

Re: What's The Best Approach To Fire This Type Of Worker? by GistFullGround: 1:41pm On Oct 19, 2022

Instead of firing him, why not compensate him with at least N5million for his long years of service. Why are some employers so heartless?

Please don't let the man curse you because he did nothing wrong.

The owner of the company should bell the cat!

Maybe he committed a SERIOUS crime.

Some crime doesn't deserve pity and forgiveness....
If he did, management will sack/retire him. They are looking for whose head to use in breaking coconut and usually it is that of an inexperienced overzealous staff.

I pity that company, this single act will turn the other workers loyalty to the company away and you know what that means.

Better look for a way to advice the board or try and discuss with them on how to follow @prof2007 suggestions.
That is what they are trying to avoid so that he can be seen as the bad person. Once they use him, it is left for them to set him up and fire him.

BabaCommander:
It's only someone with the full facts of what's on the ground that would know the best way and timing to do this.

This really should not be a problem, except the reason to fire him is not productivity related.
I always wonder where these managers that seeks advise online from.

You can load the old tuckey with more responsibilities he can't handle,...just make him know he's not valuable anymore. He will be the one ti go by himself.

It's a big task actually but one need to be bold and direct since the order is from the top management...you will have to deliver your message.

Call a round table meeting with few others..so it won't look like only one person is involved....
Start your conversation like you are praising him for all that he has done for the company BUT..then Deliver your actual message and please let he or she knows that it's from the top....

Leave sorry. This is no HR practice in a company with good ethics. You need to at least put him on a performance improvement plan and if you don't, it tells of your wickedness.

Continue been bold in doing contrary to corporate ethics, yours is coming.

If you want to become a murderer then try it. How can someone who has worked and served a company for almost his or her entire life be sack? It will be so absurd and unethical. If there is any problem, the company should try and resolve with the person instead of planning to sack

If he did not steal from the company then I do not see any reason why he should be fired summarily

I think it's better to just ask him to retire voluntarily if they feel they no longer need his services because he is no longer as efficient as he used to be
Re: What's The Best Approach To Fire This Type Of Worker? by Adgraced: 2:19pm On Oct 19, 2022
It depends on what the offence is. If it is gross misconduct such as theft, fraud, sexual harassments accusation etc, then he should be fired in line with the company's laid down policies. But if it for redundancy, or the company feels he is no longer adding value, It will be unfair to fire him after so long service. In this case the company should just allow him to retire voluntarily. That is if he wishes to retire at that point. Otherwise they should just let me be. 40years of service to a company is not a small feat!

This move is wrong. Even if the HRM want to be diplomatic with the execution of the directive, the steps to take is:

Recommend his compulsory retirement to the management of the organization. Justify your recommendations with international best practices and labor laws.

If management insist on the staff being sacked unjustly despite your recommendations. Proceed to discuss voluntary retirement notice to be tendered by the staff. I mean that the HRM official should engage the old staff in a conversation, of the record; off phone; without any recording and privately, to advise the old staff to tender a notice of voluntary retirement . If I am the HRM officer, once the old staff tenders the notice of voluntary retirement maybe on health grounds, I will accept it on behalf of the organization and present it to the management with a recommendation that the staff should be allowed to stay off work with immediate effect rather than wait for the 1 month or so notice period.

It is still a win-win situation for both management and the old staff; it also helps the HRM to uphold international best practice. Ultimately, this may be a better way to prevent litigation against the management because if the old staff is sacked unjustly, he may engage his lawyers and proceed to court.
