The Federal Government only paid lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities for 18 working days in the month of October, The PUNCH has exclusively gathered.

Lecturers and senior members of ASUU, who spoke to our correspondent under strict confidence noted that the government only paid half salaries.

The PUNCH had reported how ASUU called off its eight-month-old strike on October 14, 2022. Lecturers were encouraged to resume back to work by the union on that same day.

Speaking with our correspondent, a senior member of the National Executive Council, said, “We were only paid for the days after the strike. I received a half salary. Other members are angry right now, they are blaming the NEC for calling off the strike.”

Another member, who confirmed the development, said, “Yes, it is true, I received half salary. It seems the government is set to kill unionism in the country but we are ready for them.

The only people affected by the strike actions are always the students.. at the end of the day, the lecturers will be paid one way or the other... who will pay for wasting the students time too or are they not involved in the education process again.

Are you insinuating that they should rig the election?

Just look you. Wolf in sheep clothing. Extremely corrupt human.
But always blaming Tinubu and Buhari for their misfortune.

The students are inconsequential. Don't pretend this isn't a fact. The money from education mostly comes from government subsidies. The students pay next to nothing so they aren't the priority customer. Unlike private school if the students leave they out if business for the most part.

Their time means nothing. That's why nobody cares about wasting it. Pay attention to the last 20 years if you aren't sure. There's no electoral consequences or fiscal consequences for wasting their time. Why exactly would the governent or the schools care?

I think ASUU needs to be taught a bitter lesson. For the last ten years, they have been on strike for 3 years. Kudos to buhari, next time before any strike they will have a rethink

No WORK no PAY is as simple as ABC, Lecturers always think they are smart, you keep our Children for good 8 months at home and you want to collect salaries of the months that you didn't do your work, is that possible?

This is the best thing Buhari and APC have done in their 8 years of ruling.
How will they waste 8 months and be expecting payment.

After nine months, The FG posture is not to help students who have lost a year, to get a better motivated workforce.

The best of their lecturers have resigned and taken on better opportunities abroad.

The ones left would not abandon the means or businesses that have sustained them through the strike.

The full attention of their lecturers is probably forever lost.

The FG would recruit from the large labor market or retired civil servants if they must. You foolishly defend them. No competent individual would take an offer where the employer has reneged on agreement and is willing to sentence the employee to a 9month without a means, for their personal living or those of their dependents.

No competent individual would, when ASUU’s crime has been only to admonish FG on its failure to implement agreements he is a party to

These ones know the FG has no incentive to address any issue in so far NIC has offered itself as an instrument to nullify the ability of ASUU to negotiate change and better conditions on behalf of its members and for students.

And so the universities will continue to deteriorate, unmotivated staffs will be the universities lots, Again, what was the year sacrificed for? not for a return to well equipped laboratories or good infrastructured universities but to deteriorated universities and a workforce whose inner spirit is damaged, susceptible to corruption to augment his livelihood.
