US and Ukraine fail to accept that this is an existential war for Russia. Not the expansionism or imperialism and empire nonsense they yap about. Russia wants a neutral Ukraine, the same way the US enforces the Monroe doctrine in all the western hemisphere and will never tolerate any neighboring countries to be an ally to another superpower such as Russia and China.

For the Russians, it is either all of us are safe, or we are all in trouble. The idea that Russia must withdraw from Ukraine before Zelensky begins negotiation will never happen. Because it would mean the Russians have no leverage that will guarantee that their needs will be met. I suspect that Odesa city is the last pie that would be taken and after that, Ukraine will be a landlocked country and have no value whatsoever to the west, and like Afghanistan, they will dump Ukraine and even hang him as they did with their ally Osama.

The US desperately needs to surround Russia with its bases via the black sea, and the Russians know this well. They will never allow it to happen. Hell will freeze before Russia allow the US to station bases in its backyard, and the Russians will never forgive Putin. Stupid Elensky fails to see that he has no leverage here. If not for the west standing behind him, Ukraine would have lost long ago. He is lucky Putin is not Stalin, I can only imagine what would have become of Ukraine.

The war is the confirmation that the west needs to test Russia's backbone. As they say, talk is cheap. Russia has been warning not to let Ukraine into western alliances and is ready for genuine negotiation, but like manipulators, they need to see if you are just barking, or can actually bite. So yes, this is politics for you. They could have just skipped the savagery straight to negotiation, instead of bombings, sanctions, death, and destruction, and still end up at the negotiating table.

How can the Russian economy be weakened when the ruble has appreciated impressively after the war? Gaining new territories, forging and strengthening alliances, and guaranteeing that Ukraine will never join nato?

And who cares about a useless neighbor that wants my downfall? A hundred evil doesn't make a right. A hundred evil neighbors don't make for one good neighbor. And just in case you don't know, it is in the interest of the EU to be at peace with Russia. The whole EU combined is less than 30% of Russian territory, The EU is a tiny place. Russia is a giant.

Zelensky was pushing for a settlement that would guarantee lasting peace for Ukraine and was willing to put neutrality on the table.

Not only did the Russians not listen, they actually went after the TV stations that aired that interview in Russia. And the Russian official position was that Ukraine would have to disband their military and change their leadership. Essentially accept perpetual Russian subjugation. Obviously terms Ukraine could not accept.
