Very intelligent analysis, but the OP's statement that old dollar bills were being banned across West Africa, is a lie. Dollar bills minted 100 years ago are still valid tenders anywhere!
Noted. cool

Wait you believed that fake news about old dollar notes?? sad

The writers of that fake news achieved their exact goals, which is to make people flood the market with their old tenders.

A blogger sat at the corner of his house in Ojuelegba, wrote an article and quoted Reuters as the source without a link and people believed him? Nothing on Channels, AIT, Reuters, Arise, Punch, Blomberg, BusinessDay, Vanguard, CNN, Etc. gave that impression. The news is so fake that no credible media house bothered about debunking.

If that fake news is why we are seeing a decline in exchange rate, then the sponsors of that article truly deserve a "short-term" award .
Exactly at the bolded, news alone be it fake or authentic has a way of affecting the economy.

Didn't you watch Money Heist?

That's right. But the knowledge of the truth will lead to more troubles. Only a productive economy can give us a lasting and sustainable FX rate. There is no short cut to a sustainable FX rate.

What we see playing out now is merely a ponzi scheme, i.e., money exchanging hands within the country: individual hoarders ---> street markets---> individuals -> street markets ---> individuals.

The official exchange rate is the only means to know when naira is really gaining or losing value.

Story for the gods.

Panic selling is a disease. Better hold your dollars and hold it well... Whether cash dollars, dom account dollars, foreign account dollars or crypto/stablecoin dollars. You can't go wrong.

It’s a fake news that is working wonders. Maybe someone in CBN came up with the idea.

Once dollars floods the streets and little Naira is available, the dollar will crash against Naira at black market.

As long as the dollar is still hier than the naira, even if it's 1 naira = 2dollars, you're still not loosing. Because prices of commodities will drastically come down to what it was before, and now you can purchase those things twice. Example polo used to see 2000 naira or 4000 naira max. Now it's 10,000 naira or 12,000, so you can now purchase twice the polo.

Let's do the maths. Your salary is 500$ a month. You exchange it at 800 naira, then you get 400,000 naira. But polo is sold for 12,000 now if you divide it, you can buy 33 polos.

But if the dollar comes down to 180 naira per dollar, then you get 500* 180 =90,000 naira. It seems your money fell, but it didn't, cause polo was sold for 2k that for premium then 90,000÷ 4000=45 polos.
