As much as we should encourage people to go into farming, their is no way subsistence farming can solve the agricultural needs of a Nation,how many people can be employed through subsistence farming? Not even the farmer can be guaranteed of steady income, what we need as a nation is mechanised farming same way is done in the developed world, encourage our billionaires to embrace mechanised farming.

Please how many of the countries that we fast and pray to japa to, have their economy as measured by GDP, dominated by agriculture? Is it Britain, or America, or Canada, or even Malaysia?

Have you thought about how an individual’s productivity is much higher in manufacturing and services sector than in farming and ranching? Do you realise that greater focus on manufacturing and services sector will drive returns to farmers and ranchers higher?

So while farming is good and necessary, manufacturing and services sector are better for the overall economy.

I have Pawpaw, Plantain, Yam, Ewedu, Coconut, and regularly do Cassava (it never failed to give something at the end)

Last I checked, the world is still a hungry village. Even emperors and generals in all their wealth and riches still can't afford to starve.

Buda, you know this lalewu of a thing is somehow "true". I have had Four Papaya Trees in my compound and guess what? They all lalewu! Lol

I know it is birds and chickens that spread them and I have made two other attempts to actually plant one by drying out the seeds of a pawpaw fruit I once bought (because it is big and sweet and I was hoping to have that variety) but it failed. The shoots at all. I even try a Nursery, no show!

Your pawpaw did not grow because you did not plant it right. I planted them all the time. Easiest was to transplant those growing from the seeds that sprout from overripe ones birds ate. You see them sprout at the bottom of the tree.

Birds do plant seeds, but you'd be waiting a while for them to plant the seeds you'd want to see grow.

one thing I have come to realize as Nigerian is that we wallow in self deceit so much,ask the so called farmer how much has he made so far from this harvested seasonal crop's.

I love Farming a lot and animal husbandry. I’ve always loved gardening since i was a child, i saw huge potential in every little space around me.

Now, whenever i raise the idea of turning our idle lands into Farms, people around just find a way of discouraging me. The most cited excuses amongst others is theft.

I’ll definitely start soon, small and enlarge. Not really crazy about the profit per se but that feel of seeing your seed grow into beautiful and fruitful plants and being able to eat your own land produce, fresh. It’s satisfying.

Of course I’ll have to be sure i won’t be labouring for another lazy aszz to come steal and feed on though.

Yes, that’s why Britons have afternoon tea, even though they can’t grow tea but poverty stricken Sri Lankans do. It’s also what makes the Swiss and Belgians chocolate experts, even though cocoa is grown by poor Africans.

Do you want more examples to confirm that while food and agriculture are essential, manufacturing and services sector are more profitable for the economy

You get sense. For farming to be profitable we need billions invested into it. Imagine 20 of dangote type of investment worth billions of dollars in agriculture. Not only will this billionaire invest in farming they can also easily attract the value addition chain and also easily fix end market prices hence cutting inflation from the greedy middlemen.
For exam olams farm rice investments of $150 million can meet up 20% of Nigeria rice needs. They also cultivate about 10,000 hectares of land out of the 48,000 cultivated nation wide.
Now imagine having 10 of such investments? Those would not only exceed our local demands but also contributes massively to our exports. This big agricultural investment is what we need now. While it understands millions rely on agriculture and massive commercial firms can render millions jobless and less profitable I think a middle ground has to be established. Either we rely on this small scale farmers who are massively exploited by the middlemen who put far less work and reap huge gain to the detriment of the consumers or we look at the massive big agricultural enterprise who can deprive some locals from such gains but cultivate massively, qualitatively and easily registered price range which is consumer friendly with well coordination and easily taxed trading.

I didn't do much as I'm not always around but I have been thinking of a startup idea to encourage young people to go into agriculture by owning a small garden. Seedlings will be provided & the startup will be responsible for connecting buyers and sellers for those willing to trade, point is giving anyone who gets it to harvesting stage and can either trade the point for his garden on any e-commerce website, still a lot to be done, the idea is to make farming/agriculture as attractive as any other 21st century gig...hmm..nice though ...

I hope this is not misleading, why not show the whole farm? Crops planted same day cannot be harvested the same day.show the whole farm oga.

With due respect, crops planted the same time may be harvested the same time, it depends on many factors. You can't expect a corn variety of 80 days maturity to extend its maturity to 85 or 90 days. Living such corn on the field believing it will grow further will not work, it will rather begin to dry because it's reached its maturity terminal point.
