The Federal Government has blamed the high poverty rate in the country on the failure of the State Governments to contribute their quota of development responsibilities to the grassroots where the major production activities take place.

Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, stated this to State House Correspondents after the week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Agba was responding to a question demanding to know what he and his colleague, the Minister of Financial, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, were doing to ameliorate the biting hardship facing the majority of Nigerians at the moment.

The Minister, who attempted to defray the notion that rising levels of hunger and lack were peculiar to Nigeria, explained that the Federal Government, through many of its social security programmes, has been dedicating resources to alleviating hardship on the public, but noted that state governments, which have been consistently receiving their shares of national resources, had been misdirecting the resource to project that have almost no direct effect on the needs of the people.

He pointed out that 72 percent of the poverty in Nigeria is found in the rural areas, which he said had been abandoned by governors, adding that the state executives prefer to function in the state capitals.

He lamented that state governors are concentrating on building flyovers, airports and other projects that are visible in the state capitals rather than investing in areas that directly uplift the standard of life of the people in the rural areas.

Agba pointed out that while states are in charge of land for agriculture, they do not invest in them for the desired effect on their rural citizens.

He advised Governors that rather than concentrate attention on the building of sky scrappers, flyovers and bridges, they should focus on initiatives that can pull the majority of the people out of poverty.

Lol..

The Federal Government has blamed the high poverty rate in the country on the failure of the State Governments to contribute their quota of development responsibilities to the grassroots where the major production activities take place.

I what to believe he's talking about farming. But, how is real farming possible when the Federal government place priority on cows over human lives? "the harders come get level sotey..."They will not allow people to Farm in peace again

Awon Werey. You came in 2015 that you'd provide 3m jobs for our youths annually. Tinubu said it loudly during their campaign,...Lori iro

Buhari came to lagos and said during a town hall meeting that he'd stop political office holders from seeking medical treatments abroad. The last time we checked, he's number one customer of UK hospitals. Ordinary ear infection, he treats it abroad

As if that wasn't enough, apc came under 3 focal points...fighting insecurity, fighting corruption and improving the economy. The last time I checked, one DG under the apc stole over 100bn and is still walking freely in the street. Diezani now has a master. Boko haram annexed north west under the same failed apc. Today, we know how much a dollar is.

They said they'd improve agriculture but they asked the cbn who has no business in disbursing loan to give loans to a selected few up north on approval of buhari. Whereas, our youths they called lazy had fish ponds rice farms, etc which they financed by themselves.

I'm still waiting to see how the apc would win next year. People beg for money on the streets daily, including urchins. Those who have your phone number wouldn't let you rest. You end up sharing what you have with them by the time they end their story. God pls forgive us. Apc is a failure. We don't want them again.

A wise man once said, lets try regional system of government, ofcuz the central fought him with all they had. Today, the central is blaming the states for a nation wide poverty.

Obviously.
Many state governors are so oblivious of the necessities needed for their citizens. Imagine a state where many of its citizens not sure of their next meal, whereas the governor will be building flyovers and skyscrapers all over. They need to focus more on the needs and the reasons why people elected them to office
When governors of each states start focusing on the urgent needs and wants of its citizens, that's when national growth can be enhanced.
The Federal has little to do because rural development started from the states down to the local governments...Once, rural developments are being more pronounced and propagated at each states level, I'm sure the Power at the center won't hesitate to augment what has been done for national growth and development.

They are not solely responsible, they are a major factor though.

I could give the Federal Government 40 percent of the blame while 60 percent goes to the State Governments.

Since 2015, these APC muthafuckaz keep playing the blame game.
The number of votes the APC will garner in next year's elections will determine the number of irredeemable fools we have in this country.

So true. Those lots only collect money, pay state government workers ridiculous percentage salaries, neglect the local government workers and loot the rest with their cronies.

Someone like Yahaya Bello is the worst. Imagine paying someone on level 10, just 6000.
I wonder how these thieves sleep at night.

The governors don't think outside the box, all they know is to see the people's money as their own.

Bello practically for example treats Kogi state allocation as his personal money.

All the local government chairmen are stark illiterates inside bello's armpit.

No roads, very poor and dilapidated primary and secondary schools. No pipe borne water, no light, nothing.

So Buhari yet to realise that his policies , incompetence enthroned poverty.

Insecurity as at today is the major cause of poverty. A whole lot of farmers can no longer access their farms for fear of being killed or raped by fulani herdsmen. Thus throwing people into poverty and causing food insecurity.

Buhari's economic policies simply crumbled the economy. He shut down the southern borders thus killing businesses that thrives along the border.
