FACT is that the Africans had no choice when the European ships armed with bombs and guns berthed in coastal villages and demanded villagers provide captives or risk bombardment.

This set off a chain reaction in which villagers were forced to invade neighbouring villages to capture people to hand to the whites. Predictably, this led to a breakdown in social relations which fuelled the trade further in the region.
