Believe it or not, that snake is the fabled Black Mamba. The inside of the mouth is black, hence the name, but the body of the snake is a dark BROWN, with a brownish-yellow underbelly.

This snake is typically encountered sunning itself in open spaces near grassland. If you have gone hunting during the late afternoon or early morning hours, and suddenly heard a sound like a garden hose being pulled fast through the grass away from you, a Black Mamba is the most likely snake that just evaded you and escaped.

The Black Mamba sub-species native to West Africa is highly venomous but fortunately NOT aggressive and territorial like its East African and South African cousins that are renowned for chasing humans through the bush and killing them with a single hypodermic bite delivered faster than the eye can track.
