I ran to police station to seek succor and protection from police against fraudsters who entered my car because I thought police was my friend. Police after negotiating with the fraudsters, detained me and tortured me to plead guilty for offense I didn't commit.

The summary of it is that police is your ENEMY.

The death of a corrupt policeman who was recently ran over by dangote truck while trying to stop a Lexus car driven by young guys who refused to stop gives me joy. All those policemen and policewoman involved in torturing me will die a very painful and miserable death.

Today on my travel experience story

As the saying goes, 'The police is your friend' not in Africa may be in Europe.

Nowhere in the world is 100 per cent perfect but police in Africa is worse including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Togo, Benin Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso.

Africa police all have one thing in common — kidnapping, murder, theft, rape, torture, unlawful arrests, high-handedness, humiliation, unlawful detention, extrajudicial killings, and extortion.

I would like to put this here as a Nigerian solo traveller that has visited 36 States of the most populous nation in Africa, Nigeria, also some African countries and European countries.

I love travelling more than anything. I like to share my genuine experiences about my travel to people in fact I derived joy from it.

So I created a travel blog in 2016 to share my love of travel, adventure, and help inspire others to travel.

Here's my experience with Africa and Europe police;

Benin Republic — I was harassed by the police for no reason.

Togo — police harassed me and took my phone for trying to snap a selfie in their border

Ghana — remove Nigeria on the list, Ghanaian police are the most corrupt set in Africa. I visited a friend in 2018, I was told that police arrest and extort Nigerians daily in the country with 100k to 200k bail charges so I started dressing like Ghanaians. To cut a long story short, my first week in the country I came out from the house to take some shot and learn about their culture, I met police at a roadblock in Kasoa so they arrested me and labelled me a fraudster even with my stamped international passport I transferred 50k from my Nigeria account to bail myself.

South Africa - I was treated like a rag

Mali and Burkina Faso - extortion in this too country is another day story na Nigerians body dem de get power.

Kenya - very heartless set of people

Egypt - This is the best place I have visited in Africa without police harassing me or treating me like trash.

Nigeria (My country) - I have been extorted many times in Nigeria. In Lagos, police took me to their station for putting on a red shoe (I hate red now) drove me to a cyber cafe at Isolo. Forced me to log on my Facebook, searched for cultists orientation related words. They took me to an ATM center and collected all the money in my account, God bless my cousin who sent me 3k for transport that day.

Europe: Europe remains the safest continent on earth. I have paid a visit to some of the European countries including Greece, Finland, Sweden, Bulgary. To be very honest, I have not experienced unlawful arrests, high-handedness, humiliation, unlawful detention, and extortion except the day I police asked for my document they checked it and told me 'thanks for your cooperation, we are very sorry'. I have not seen a policeman with an AK-47 since I came to Europe, no fighting, everywhere is so peaceful and calm.

I'm sorry, but my English is not very good. I am typing with Russian lang PC too.

I am talking about myself, I don't know about you. Share your experience with the police abroad with us.
Black is beautiful but black no like you bro. Remain where you are in Europe

People talk about racism and discrimination abroad’. They mostly refer to Western countries when they say this.

I admit racism exist, but in my over a decade travelling and living the ‘West’, compared to my decades living in Nigeria, I can say the West is Paradise comparatively, as long as you are no criminal. Never experienced police harrassment. Very high level of professionalism amongst all the security services

I keep saying this - I suffered far more discrimination (tribal and otherwise) in Nigeria than I have ever experienced abroad

Even the unfolding elections in Nigeria is mostly Tribal

Nigeria and most Black African countries are sadly so backward!! They are a Race left behind!
Couldn't agree more....

This guy just want to create a thread with police.
Most times we are the once that creates this problem because we fill we have a right which I know it fine.

But sometimes a polite, respectful and friendly conversation with Policemen goes a long way to prevent all this harassment.

Comparing Nigerian police to foreign police is like comparing Nigerian girls to their foreign counterparts...once you collect naija girls number they become orphans while their foreign counterparts have parents..so u see grin Nigeria is nigeria
Re: My Experience With The Police In Africa Vs Europe by Originalsly: 12:02pm On Dec 10, 2022
Don't you think most of what you faced was because they recognized you're a Nigerian? Ones before us have gone to these countries and made it hell for those going after. Next time you visit these same countries dress as the locals ... try to fit in ... talk less and let us know if the results will be the same.
Police in Europe or the developed countries are very much the same ... people are the same worldwide.. and are capable of doing the me s in African countries..... the difference I think is other countries have measures in place to reduce this kind of corruption while African countries may have them on paper but they are never enforced. As in the US.... if you offer a Policeman a bribe .... 99% of the time he will appear surprised and want to know if it's for him .... and 99% of the time you signal it's for him he will arrest you for bribery. Even if the Police wants to take it... he will wonder if the one offering the bribe is an undercover Police ... part of their anti corruption task force. This kind of anti corruption measure is lacking in Aficn countries so the average Police is on duty to extort the population.

This why we think oppressing ourselves or the weak is a flex or even a normal behaviour.

There must be something about you that attracts policemen. I've been in Nigeria for many decades and travelled out quite a bit, not once have I been harassed by policeman, customs or point of entry officers.

People don't know how to handle law enforcement officers. Always be polite, gentle and respectful. Many have been killed even in Europe and USA for running their mouths and trying to challenge a man with a gun, all in the name of knowing their rights.
I've witnessed several times Nigeria women slapping police in Nigeria and getting away with it. I've also witness Nigerian men dragging and fighting police, snatching rifles and throwing away beside the road. To be frank one of these was an uncle of mine. I was terrified that day, as he pushed, shouted and dragged rifle with the officer and the police man's collogues where shouting and pointing gun, saying that he would die today and all that stuff. In the end nothing happened. The women pleaded and it all subsided. Try that in Europe, America, Brazil or the Caribbean and see what happens.

Most things said about Nigeria online I find untrue to my experiences. It is possible that Nigerians have been programmed by oppositional politics narratives to automatically mouth negative stuff without drawing upon thire experience both negative and positive in order to arrive at an equitable view of things.

You are absolutely correct. Africa, especially the black part is just a piece of shit in its entirety.

Here in the States, I think it’s the same with your experience in Europe. I was once driving to a job site with a company van, it was a snowy morning, my windshield wiper fluid wasn’t working, for some reason, I had to pull over by the road, this was a busy highway. The moment I parked, a police car just parked behind me, the police man came out, then I was already out of the van. He asked me what the problem was which I explained. He said:
“I just want to make sure you are safe. I will park behind you, put my siren lights on, so that oncoming vehicles won’t hit you.” He waited until I fixed the problem. And he drove behind me for some considerable distance to make sure I am now fine and he zoomed off.

I feel more safe, protected, at home, in the midst of white people, than I felt in the midst of my own people back home.
People always smile at you and say hi, and like to talk to you.
Like you said, no place is perfect, but those African countries are terrible place to live

I can't agree MORE with you on your observations and assertions. But one thing you forgot to mention is the main reasons why you were treated with levity and inhumanely. The main reasons are self-hatred and your country of origin. How can these other countries' police officers respect and treat you like a human being when they know that your own police officers treat you like an animal that deserves NO humane treatment? I can guarantee you that the same police officers would be bending over backward to treat an American or a westerner with the utmost respect. These officers would even kill for them their own fellow countrymen if asked to do so.

Litmus,
Thanks for this input. Even if I disagree with you slightly, you are still on point

American and European Police will shoot you without a trace just for being black. You only see a fraction of abuse on tv or video.

In Africa, we fight back Police because we have Right at home Africans do not have overseas. Even old men hold unto Police shirt in Africa for disrespecting or slapping them.

Former Secretary of State General Colin Powell, former white major of New York with a Black son and former President Obama advised you stay stay quiet or even beg for your life until you are in a safe place to report them.

In Nigeria, not only do we fight Police, we organize against wayward soldiers! It is called Home Right and Freedom to Fight Back daily. Try that overseas, u hia.

I thank the guy I quoted below for his gut. Police, especially with a gun abuse their power all over the world.

Yet, we must never fail to condemn African Police for corruption and abuse of innocent people, especially those at the Bus Stops used to generate money.

Litmus:
