I will be doing just 200 stand. Am planting it basically because of my mother and spouse both of them love pounded yam. Am posting it so that farmer to be will know stress it entails! I don't see myself cultivating yam commercially, it is too expensive grow and little return at the end of 8-7month. I paid 5k to labourer that help me brush the forest...

I'm planning to go into yam farming but yam beetles has been my greatest challenge. U have any idea about how it can be controlled?

How often do I need to apply for maximum control?
Any other chemical if I'm unable to locate this one in my area?

We are already harvesting and eating our yam and you're planting now.I am not understanding Sir,or it's your farm close to a river? Too many questions, sorry I'm just a curious fella cry

I dont know how often. But if I'm to do it myself, I will apply 2x - when the tuber starts forming and 2 months before harvesting. But note that irrigation is needed after applying.

As for alternative to Rocket, I don't know. But I believe you will find if you search hard enof.

1. Am not irrigating it 2. I don't have FADAMA, I will buy two good different variety from my people here. Here In South West, we plant early yam in November ending till December, and late yam in January-early march. I will be planting early, then mulch by January so that the plant Will not get burn. Keep following... you can always ask questions and I will answer you!

Thank God for the differential weather condition between North and South. It's helping us to boost food security as a nation. we dont need irrigation to plant yam by Nov in the south, mulching with leaves will take care of scorching effect of the sun and as early as June ( even in May if the farm is in a marshy area) new yam is out in the south. Apart from harvestin early, if the root systems are not damaged, you can harvest twice from a stand, the smaller sizes among the second harvests are mostly used as yam seeds for planting materials.

Wow! Thanks for the indepth analysis.Honestly, I didn't take note of this weather variation as having effect on crop production.Maybe; because I haven't lived in the South all my life.

Next...I break the yam seed, deep the seed inside insecticide then planted it yesterday. Once the yam sprout out, I will do first weeding then use the unwanted plant to do mulching.

Weldone sir. Nice work. However, is the yam seeds not quite expensive? At 850 per one

yam don't need water to pull out/germinate. If you want to harvest yam by next year June/July, time to plant is nov-jan. Once it sprout out,I will mulch the young leaf so it'll not get burn by sun.

Sir even at 350 per 1 is costly for yam seeds. The person you bought your seeds from reaped you off. Please next time 150 or worst case 180 per seed yam is ok nothing more nothing less.

Secondly grow your own yam seeds yourself using mini sett technology. Use YouTube as your guide. You see alot of helpful videos there to guide you through so that no one reaps you off again.

What if each seed is big enough or has multiple tubers attached together in such a way one can cut one into 3 or 2, is the N350 still fair?

No it's not fair. Normally seed yams are heaped in 100's that is 1hand= 100 pieces of small but whole yam seeds set aside for planting. At this period that is December to January it is usually cheaper to get but from February you start getting ridiculous price.

At this period whole sett seed yams should go for between 20 to 25k per hand while cut pieces go for 15 to 20k per hand. At this period whole sett seed yams are common and whether e carry multiple tubers or not. It is usually the job of the seller to separate multiple tubers

I stand by the fact that he was reaped off

you Should factor variety and quality of the seed, between I broken some to like 4,3 and 2. If you are buying viable quality Head yam which you can't break into 2 in my area, you have #200 per one. I saw lesser price and More quantity that day, but I decided to went for this One. It is possible am reaped up like you said, but for me variety, quality and viable matter when am choosing seed!

My advice for you is that you do the mini sett system to get more of that particular type of seed yam so that you don't have to buy again
