Yoruba has always been an international language......it goes well beyond Nigerian borders

Nigerian border? Yoruba that is spoken in Brazil, Cuba, the Carribean, Colombia, Argentina etc. Please, lets give our Yoruba people their laurels. Our culture is very strong. Definitely, the strongest in Nigeria.

Does that mean other ethnicities aren't there? Aren't they making effort to take much out of opportunities that Lagos has to offer? Which ethnicity outnumber others numerically? Which ethnicity is ruling the state? Don't be insecure like him, sir?

Lagos is Yorubaland just as Imo is Igboland. What is hard for you to understand there?

I've been advising non Yoruba people to learn Yoruba language because it's fast becoming the standard language of not only communication and social interaction, but entertainer, culture, literature and social currency.

^^^
This is false.

There are millions of Nigerians outside Western Nigeria who do not speak or understand Yoruba - and they are getting by. They communicate and interact with one another - with family and friends etc. and not one word of Yoruba enters the mix. They entertain themselves, read, socialize and in summary, live their lives - and its all done in several languages other than Yoruba. You are stretching the truth by miles with this preposterous claim that Yoruba is becoming a standard language across Nigeria. It simply isn't true.

plaindealer:
Don jazzy and his Marvin people saw the trend and quickly jumped on the bandwagon with their latest all-star hit song WonDa Mo.

^^^
grin

Again, there are millions of Nigerians who don't know anything about 'Don jazzy', 'marvin people' grin or their "all star hit songs" grin. It simply isn't an issue or a priority for them - they are getting on with the ordinary business of living in a very difficult environment. Don jazzy and co.'s business and career choices are not on the radar screen for these Nigerians. They have other priorities!

plaindealer:
Yoruba is now the face of Nigeria and even Nigerian music and movie, they are the face of Afro Beats.

^^^
grin

This is again, false. And you know it.

There are millions of Nigerians who are not enthralled by urban Nigerian popular culture. It is highly presumptuous to think everyone in Nigeria lives only for music and movies. People have real lives to live!

plaindealer:

The new Nigerian series on Netflix was produced with special preference and addition of Yoruba language and main characters, it's not by accident, Yoruba language and culture are the dominant identification and point of reference when projecting Nigeria to the outside world.

^^^
grin

Netflix series? Call us when the Mossad or the FSB consult this series when making policy.

Projecting Nigeria to the outside world? Who is doing this projection and on whose behalf? grin

plaindealer:
If you don't speak or understand Yoruba language, learn it for your own good, it's the future of Nigeria or after Nigeria.

^^^^
The same can be said for Hausa, Igbo, Ibibio, Tiv, Ijaw, Igala, Idoma, Bini, Urhobo, Berom, Jukun etc.

We've seen several 100% Yoruba-speaking movies on Netflix, but never igbo or Hausa movies, in fact, Netflix signed contracts with Ebony Life and Kunle Afolayan to produce movies and TV Shows for Netflix, meaning Yoruba movies and TV shows projecting Yoruba language and culture.

Imagine igbo speaking show on Netflix, it won't sell, the language is not sweet, it's not welcoming, and it's just too harsh to the ear. Same with igbo songs, won't sell or go mainstream.

Apple and orange comparison.

Swahili and Hausa languages are predominant languages in tens of countries in Africa, not just in SA or Nigeria hence the need to kill 2 birds with one stone to reach several Hausa and Swahili-speaking countries.

In this context, we are talking about Nigeria, not other countries.

Do they speak Hausa or Swahili in South America or the Caribbean? No, but they speak Yoruba and Yoruba culture is dominant also.

You made zero sense with that argument.

This is false.

The dominant culture in South America is not Yoruba. The dominant culture in the Caribbean is not Yoruba.

Get your facts straight.

Yoruba is spoken in these places but it is spoken by a minority of the population. Another poster on here - clearly more informed than I am - aptly described it as being relegated to a liturgical language.

Don't be a low class politician," it is dominated by yorubas" is clearly different from " it is Yoruba". We all know where you are going but it is high time you abandon the journey.

Saying it's "dominated by yoruba" implies it's typically or meant to be dominated by something else instead.

I didn't mean to imply that. I was using that to allude to the fact that Lagos is a megacity where influx all over the world is on a daily. This has made competition for control of helm high whether politically or economically. Several tribes are laying claims to it too; some historically, others politically.

If you are going to criticize, at least do so with reasonable and legitimate views.

It's actually better than Blood and Water from top to bottom.

Their are a million School and similar TV shows all over the world so did they all copied blood and water.

Some of you just criticize without rational thoughts.

Yes, 9ice is Oyo. I thought Davido is Osun. Is Osun not Ife?

Teni, Niniola, Simi are from Ekiti/Ondo axis. Sheyi Shay is from Osun too. Ayra star is from Kwara.

Why was Yoruba the ONLY African culture/language that survived in the Americas after slavery? Hausa did not survive, Igbo did not survive, Akan, Ashanti, Ewe none of them survived. Why is that?

What's there to compare? They have nothing in common apart from the fact that it's spoken in Nigeria just like Yoruba.
