I have noticed with keen interest how the Yoruba language has become the major language of use in Nigerian commercial and entertainment sectors.

Igbo use to be especially in Nollywood but since the past two decades, Yoruba language has been the choice language in our music industry, and recently, it is gradually taking over the movie industry too.

Even most Nigerian slangs on socials media (Twitter, Facebook,etc.) are mostly of Yoruba Origin.

I know Lagos, a Yoruba dominated state and commercial capital of Nigeria, plays a major role in these. However, their tendency to infuse their culture in whatever they do thereby propagating it cannot be ignored also.

The "soft power" is getting stronger year by year and this will play a major role in Nigerian future politics and Africa at large.

I've been advising non Yoruba people to learn Yoruba language because it's fast becoming the standard language of not only communication and social interaction, but entertainer, culture, literature and social currency.

I'm Nigeria at the moment, if you don't put out Yoruba song or movie or at least add a few Yoruba words and phrases, you can not crossover with a few exceptions.

Don jazzy and his Marvin people saw the trend and quickly jumped on the bandwagon with their latest all-star hit song WonDa Mo.

Yoruba is now the face of Nigeria and even Nigerian music and movie, they are the face of Afro Beats.

The new Nigerian series on Netflix was produced with special preference and addition of Yoruba language and main characters, it's not by accident, Yoruba language and culture are the dominant identification and point of reference when projecting Nigeria to the outside world.


If you don't speak or understand Yoruba language, learn it for your own good, it's the future of Nigeria or after Nigeria.

Very odd way to put it.

Yoruba is spoken in small pockets of the Caribbean, South and Central America, yes. But it is spoken mostly by the descendants of former slaves (people who are still fighting a liberation war of sorts as we speak) and Ifa/YTR devotees. Instead of crowing about internationalization, devote your energy towards assisting the Yoruba speaking underclass in Brasil, Cuba etc. That would be a more worthy endeavour.

It's relegated to a liturgical language, I wouldn't say it's widely spoken.

When we say Yoruba is the face of Nigeria, it's a fact.

Another example is the chart below, this is what people stream all over the world in terms of Nigerian music, number one artist and song down to number 9 are all Yoruba songs and Yoruba artists.
