Great thanks for doing this rewarding work. You are a blessing to this generation of Yoruba people that is almost lost to the oyinbo culture and practices. Best wishes and regards. |

[quote author=duro4chang post=118664706]There are many Yorùbá names whose meanings are now lost due to the fact that the words forming their roots are no longer in use. For instance, ask the young Master Ọlọ́pàádé the meaning of his name and he will probably tell you that his name means “the policeman has come“. Ask Mr. Ọlọ́paádé, his father, and he would probably tell you it means “the owner of the staff has come“. The two of them would be wrong as Ọlọ́pàádé actually means “the Ọpa (re|re) devotee has come“. The same goes for all other Ọpa names like Opadotun. Those names show that the ancestors of the bearers of the names were worshippers or devotees of the Ọpa Cult otherwise called Awo Ọpa, one of the religious cults or secret societies proscribed by the British in colonial days. This is highly educating but I want to point out something here. Opa is an affixation for people from families who worship EGUNGUN and ORISA-OKO. |

When someone is not doing well in life or having bad luck, Nigerians will attribute the cause to his surname. They will forget all the times he has been having good luck and fortune were smiling on him. And Pastors will scare him to attend deliverance sermons and say that until he change that his name which could be Ogungbemi, ifayemi, Ifatope, Orisabunmi, Ogujimi e.t.c into a Christian name his situation will become worse. |

duro4chang:It seems Bulaba didn't drop your N30k for the month of December. Now you have decided to do something meaningful with your life for once. Abandoning your core mandate on Nairaland to be discussing Yoruba names and meanings calls for thorough investigation. |

I have always thought all names with 'Ade' mean crown or king. Thinking about it now, I realised it shouldn't have been. Thank you for sharing. These are beautiful names. Each name has a story. Thinking about how these people lived judging by their names gives me the full heritage of the yoruba culture |

Wowzerfull so enlightening I also think lack of ami ohun while writing these names in Yoruba language aided in the misconception of names, If names are spelt with their amin ohun I. E tonation one might not make those mistakes. Very very insightful, names we have given different meanings from what they originally mean. Kudos OP. These are educative topics that should be discussed here jare. |

phidipe:The moment you mention "Elu" I knew you are from Ife. i know some with the same name with double Elu's in his name. "Elu" could be Ife dialect of "Olu". But we need from Ife to give its exact meaning |

Elliotwaveforec:Reason why there are lots of Oku names in Ijebu. Okusanya, okunuga, okunnowo. I always wondered if it the Oku in those names means corpse, it just didn't tally with the rest of the name. I know iga- is palace always wondered if okunuga was corpse in the palace. If it means God of wealth I. E Aje it still makes sense. I am Ijebu. |
