If he does they may rally around Scalisle or Stefanik. But, it's going to be hard for either to govern. The right will feel empowered having beheaded McCarthy and there are a lot of Republicans who won Dem seats. Those people are going to want to keep those seats in 2 years and won't be eager to go along with the crazy side of the House.

This speaks more about the extremism of the 7 blockheads voting against him. If they bring forward a nutcase, the moderates in the GOP will also reject the nutcase, and they are the majority

The Speakership isn't owned to anyone. I think it's over for him. The extremists you speak of are exactly that, extremists. I doubt they'll back down. He can only lose 4 and there are more than 4 who seem to personally not want him to win.

The crazier thing is that we constitutionally don't have a House right now and so we don't have a functional Government. If something were to happen (terrorist attack), we would no be able to pass any bills as every bill has to go through the House and no elected member of the House is officially a member until they are sworn in. This mess extends further than just the Republicans.
