As a driver you must have had something like this or something close in the past.
I will never forget that day, I and my wife to be, now my wife, was traveling to go and meet my mum. Around 8pm, everywhere was already dark, on a highway. I wasn't using my full headlight, just normal. It was a dualized federal road, and wasn't expecting any sane person to take one-way inside darkness without any form of light on it.
it wasn't just my time. it could have been a headon collision with a tipper. I return all glory to God.

Does the saying "the young 'shall' grow" still persist in Nigeria?

May they rest in peace. One of many problems with Nigeria is impunity at every level.
The driver of that truck will run away, nothing will happen to the owner of the truck, no one will be held responsible. So pathetic.

Put caution on the road in case of breakdown..

this loss was needless
Several factors could be at play, considering the time of the accident, and it looks like a bus coming from the northern part of the country, poor weather, the driver might have been weary comsidering the likely distance covered, the truck driver might have put up caution sign and it might have gone missing, no thanks to those conndemned iron people that steal anything they can carry. May God help us.

Road safety and VIO's and even police mostly don't work in the night and that is when all these faulty and road worthless vehicles especially trucks move freely.

God saved me one night like that. The truck in from of me was oozing so much smoke that my visibility was almost zero, I waited till we got to where the road was very wide before I decided to overtake even without any visibility, few seconds after overtaking; gbam!!! See a brokendown truck in front on the same side I had overtaken from.
I was shaking at the wheels till I got to Ibadan.
I believe this must have been what happened to this vehicle.

May God continue to guide and protect in the lawless "kwantri" that we have found ourselves.

Those truck drivers need to be sentence to death anytime these kind of accidents happen.

I understand your narrative and many similar instances abound. How can someone take one way at night, and without head light. Or you will see many of them on the highway at night without any backlight nor even simple reflective stickers.

Why do some of these drivers speed as if they have a spare life at home? angry

This is the real function of FRSC
HOW do we assess their effectiveness?
Instead they are looking for how to carry firearms
Exactly my point. They should be on patrol ith speed guns to measure speed and anyone caught will be chased down, booked and pay a fine on the spot. Thank God for ATM cards and internet banking. No one can say he has to go to bank to withdraw money to pay fine. Just log onto the FRSC fines portal and pay your fine. Very simple solution. But is usual no one in government is thinking.

accidents hardly happen abroad why?
Abroad is a saner clime, where law is law. And nobody is above the law.

In Nigeria apart from bad road, we have lawlessness, indicipline and carelessness as the major causes of accidents.

Lawlessness: There are regulated speed for vehicles to operate: Residential/business area should between 20 to 30km/hr; Major roads in a City or town 50km/hr; highways 100 to 120km/hr.
So which of our drivers adhere to the above regulations?

Most vehicle on ours ways are not road worthy; expired and sustandard tires, overloading by articulated trucks e.t.c

Non adherence to road signs;

The Police Force, FRSC, and VIO who are suppose to maintain law and order, and punish law breakers are themselves are cupable and fantastically corrupt.

It is lawlessness, coupled with corruption. If the law is active, Nigerians will learned by fire by force.

Nigeria wasn't like this, during colonial times and few years after independence - Nigerians were diciplined and law abiding.

Nigeria is one hell of a place. There are just few normal people in Nigeria.

Since the advent of mobile phone, it is only once i have seen a driver parked his car to answer a call. Without and regulatory body in sight.

That is part of it but not everything is apprehension an punishment what about education and enlightenment.
What about rescue and first aid? How many ambulances do they have? That orientation towards being a law enforcement agency moves them towards corruption
They shouldn't have any power of arrest on the road just like there should not be arrest on the roads for not paying tax.. Let us measure their performance by road deaths.
I saw on TV last week the new boss on TV being decorated and saluting like a soldier. That is wrong and total misorientation. Their original mandate was to reduce road deaths and was expanded to corruption loaded activities like licencing etc
Many do not know Wole Soyinka was the First boss Marshal
It was set up because of road deaths so how do we judge success?I
An incident like this should be counted as a failure for them ,if that happens regularly that is where they will focus

Over here if one beat traffic, if he/she is highly connected, the traffic officer who tries to fine them loses his/her job. Otherwise, the offender bribes his way out.

Our government should give automatic fifteen year jail term to truck driver who abandon vehicles on highway without caution notice. Most of this driver's take Indian hemp while driving. In some cases both driver n conductors are under the influence of drugs.
