That's the way an average Nigerian thinks ..I've engaged him once but e start to para...I asked him what is the benefit for Nigerians as one of the biggest exporter of crude the answer I got was that even if we Nigerians should get any form of safety net when subsidy is 100% removed we should pay more taxes.. minimum wage is about 100 liters of fuel or less, some people are earnings way below 30,000 a month how will they survive?, Cost of living, transportation, food prices will skyrocket ..how do we cope?..everyday removing subsidy is the answer, then only the rich go they drive cars while marketers operating in the downstream sector go they make super normal profit... deregulate diesel and competition go drive down price now we they so ..
Them don they stylishly they remove subsidy from education, remove for fuel ...wetin common man go do?
When them want Nigerians to suffer them go they compare the country with Benin,Togo etc
Fix our refineries ..you say NO, use the meagre resources they find crude for north.
Misplaced priority...tueh!
Agbegbaorogboye:
You made excuse of population and crude production for Algeria

Does Ghana, Niger, Benin, Cameroon have comparable population of crude production with Nigeria that you're using them as basis for comparison.
Are you saying Nigeria shouldn't aspire to be like Algeria and Angola economy wise but should aspire to be like her smaller and poorer neighbors?

Kobonaire,

I am an empiricist.

I think data driven solutions provide a greater chance of solving problems.

I had several debates with a fellow named grandstar on this fuel subsidy issue. I asked him several times to provide the data proving that NNPC was selling PMS from KRC, PHRC etc. below cost price. He couldn't. And you haven't either. Its just been speculation all the way. I think you'll agree with me that this information was crucial to the discussion as at then. Anyway...that has all been overtaken by events since none of the refineries is producing at the moment. We are 100% importing refined fuel now and selling below cost price. This is clearly unsustainable. I have said this several times. Don't make it seem as if we are in favour of subsidies no matter how irrational - that simply isn't true.

The subsidy (on imported fuel) clearly has to go. The question is: what's the plan to manage the fallout?
Do I need to explain to you the obvious?

Just take a look at the price of diesel, kerosene and petrol. The first two are no longer subsidized and their prices deregulated.

Another method of gleaning whether there's a subsidy is to check the prices of petrol in neighboring countries? Why are they much higher than ours?

If there's no subsidy, then let the government complete wash its hands off fixing the petrol price. I don't know why people who say there is no subsidy cry when the prices go up.

If Buhari, who has long claimed no subsidy exist has now been embarrassed by the obvious and his government has chosen to use the term "under recovery" to define it.

This petrol subsidy denial is now spending 4.73 trillion in the first half of this year on petroleum subsidy. That's the equivalent of $10.5bn at the senseless official exchange rate.

This is what government should do henceforth: it should allow by July 2023 when Dangote refinery is ready for anyone who wants to import pms to do so.

Dangote has already said his products would be sold at the international price which is standard practice in the business. If he sells his pms at $0.50 per litre which is N385/litre, let's see how you will buy it for 165?

The purpose for allowing imports is for there to be competition or else, he will rip off consumers
With competition, his prices will be competitive

Anyway, the pms price subsidy will be removed and the price will be deregulated this July based on the Petroleum Industry Bill. The scenario I envisaged would be put to practice.

Let's watch whether the price will remain 165 or not?

Buhari through APC promised to fix refineries just as OBJ did according to you and build new one every year.
Why haven't they done that

Now you've started behaving like that grandstar fellow.

The link you provided doesn't say anything new. I know there is a subsidy on imported fuel. I've known that for years. What isn't so clear is whether there is (or was) a subsidy on locally refined fuel. And you have avoided answering that question.

^^^
This is not clear and I'm not sure if it is deliberate. What price? The black market price? The landing cost of imported fuel? What price? No hearsay, speculation or conjecture please - I want hard evidence.

^^^
You clearly have a problem with price controls - and that's fine. You also have a problem with subsidies - and that's a little harder to defend. Do you have a problem with subsidies as a matter of principle or just how they are sometimes implemented? undecided Because that's a whole new discussion on its own.
You need evidence to knowing there's a subsidy on locally refined oil?

There's this myth that refining petrol locally will make it dirt cheap. It's a myth.

The price of pms is international based and its not based on cost of production.

How much is Bonny light crude oil? Just search on Google and you will get the prevailing price. The price of petrol is like that. Dangote has already said his price will reflect the international price.

If there's going to be any benefit of local production, it would be cost of international transportation would be gone. However, transport cost is miniscule. I doubt it would reduce the price by more than 5%.

Stop talking rubbish, we have the raw materials, if we re producing locally the international price will only apply to exported products.
The only reason why the price is high globally is because there is an artificial scarcity.

We meet again, Grandstar.

The only way to banish that ghostly "myth" is with cold hard evidence. Prove your assertion with evidence. All I need is the true cost of local refining. That's all. We'll never know the truth till we have those figures.

grandstar:
The price of pms is international based and its not based on cost of production.
^^^
Which price? undecided

Sure, if you import PMS from Norway, the UK or Russia through Glencore or Trafigura - you will pay international prices. But for locally refined PMS? undecided

As for your other point...of course cost of production is a factor. Isn't that Kobonaire's whole argument - oil marketers shouldn't be forced to sell below cost price? undecided

grandstar:
If there's going to be any benefit of local production, it would be cost of international transportation would be gone. However, transport cost is miniscule. I doubt it would reduce the price by more than 5%.
^^^
shocked

I am worried.

Can you honestly say the cost of hiring giant oil tankers crossing the seas with their cargo comes down to 5% of the cost of a litre of PMS? undecided You see why we need the facts?!

The conjecture needs to stop. I am not even taking a position that there is or isn't a subsidy on each litre of fuel that NNPC refines (or rather, used to refine) locally. I just want the truth - the facts will speak for themselves. That's all.

For you to even contest the fact that international shipping costs are a key factor in this discussion leaves me very concerned.

You're arguing about something you know little of.

If Nestlé should buy cocoa in Nigeria to use at its factory in ikeja, the price it will pay for it will reflect the international price. The only benefit is that it can buy it at a wholesale price from cocoa merchants here.

Even cocoa farmers are aware of this. I am from a cocoa producing region. Whatever price they sell is influenced the international price.

Wait until the government deregulates the price in July. Reality will set in

You are not telling me anything I don't know. We have gone over this too many times to count. I am weary of saying the same thing over and over again.

For the avoidance of doubt: I know there is a subsidy on petroleum products in Nigeria. Our refineries have zero output at the moment. Fuel imports are denominated in foreign currencies and the Naira is depreciating sharply against those currencies. It is clear there is a subsidy and it is unsustainable. What you have never been able to prove is whether there was a subsidy on local refining (when the refineries were working). I have pressed you on this but you have never given a clear answer. This question is important and deserves an answer.

grandstar:
If there's no subsidy, then let the government complete wash its hands off fixing the petrol price. I don't know why people who say there is no subsidy cry when the prices go up.

Fair argument.

I have a question for you though. Could this administration have used the money spent on subsidy so far to build new refineries instead? Was that an option?

grandstar:
This is what government should do henceforth: it should allow by July 2023 when Dangote refinery is ready for anyone who wants to import pms to do so.

^^^
Your real issue is that you are in favour of international prices across the board - even for local consumption of a product that is produced locally. This is why you are not interested in local cost of production - it doesn't fit into your international pricing model. You have no problem with producers recording supernormal profits in a key industry with significant barriers to entry.

Far too many of you have an extremely narrow view of the problems facing enterprise in this country. I have a question for you: AGO and DPK subsidies were lifted years ago. Licenses were also issued to modular refiners years ago with the expectation that they would take advantage of the deregulated AGO & DPK environment. So what happened?

The subsidy on imported PMS will go no doubt, and the downstream environment will be fully deregulated. But if new investment doesn't flow in and local refining capacity remains stagnant - and you end up with a Dangote industry monopoly, then what? What will be the excuse then?

There's so much talk about international pricing of extractive resources. Why is it that international pricing of labour never gets a mention?
Re: Mr Macaroni Reacts To The Fuel Scarcity Across The Country by tunjilee003: 9:37pm On Jan 19, 2023
Nigerians will vote and then demand that the cause of the fuel scarcity should be kept.

Ghana, Niger, Benin, Cameroon, and most African countries do not have queues. That is because...they do not keep fuel subsidy.

Algeria charges less for fuel than Nigeria...but they have a smaller population and produce more crude than we do, so they can afford it.

Same for Angola.

But we have 200 million people, and priduce 1.52m barrels of crude a day....and yet we want to live like UAE that has 15million people and produces 2.4m barrles of crude a day?

APC kept subsidy, and messed up our economy.

Anyway, e dey sweet me, that at least the three main candidates are supporting subsidy removal.

If you want an end to fuel queues forever....REMOVE SUBSIDY, and LET THE MARKETERS SET THEIR PRICES...

Yes, we will pay N900 per liter...but yes, we would save dollars, and yes, we would make refining at home sensible.
and you think the common man will pay 900 conveniently even when the minimum wage is stagnant for years
