The popular narrative that it would reduce or stop voting buying during the election is largely false. Politicians will buy it from Bank managers and thus would have it to buy the votes. And I think this the major reason it's scare: majority of the ones given to banks have been bought by politicians.

All I see is a big win for the lords of CBN and Banks. But huge suffering to the poor masses.

#As pointed out by the article, the deadline will be postponed. Don't panic.

My fear however is that considering the current fuel scarcity in addition to the deadline, it would likely lead to a protest. This might necessitate postponing the election date thereby extending Buhari's stay in office. Very bad!

Zenith bank operates in that way you see him operate.
SmartPolician:
How did an empty man like Godwin Emefiele rise to become the GMD of almighty Zenith Bank?

I guess it was through office politics that sacrificed competence on the altar of political sagacity grin

In all fairness though, this naira redesign policy remains the best thing he has done since he took over that office. The only challenge is poor implementation.

God bless you for your understanding, this is exactly what Tinubu complained about yesterday that some idiots miss interpreted him , he knew the policy will either pitch more masses against APC candidates in Nigeria or may lead to postponement of the election . I’m still wondering why some fools thinks Tinubu speaks for nothing.

The new naira notes are very scarce, especially the five and two hundred naira notes.

I know this may be a way preventing politicians from vote buying but it will hurt nigerians as well

People are already throwing the old naira notes away
Not really becay if vote buying,,The cbn governor sometimes last year printed excess money that Obaseki raised alerm on that,,his looking for ways to clean his mess by reintroducing new naira note.

He is still printing money for Buhari to spend. If he was worried about inflation he ought to have stopped. The money he prints for Buhari is electronic money, not physical money. Therefore withdrawing notes has nothing to do with inflation. It is only going to crush the poor.

The new naira design and withdrawal limit might be a political tool all along, but, withdrawing note has everything to do with inflation, although other policies are needed to make it work effectively.

Could it be that Emefieli who has been printing money for Buhari like a printing machine is worried that there's way too much money in circulation and might be using this policy to reign in on that?

Emefiele has not been printing cash. Quantitative easing doesn’t mean printing money. They simply create money and transfer it to the desired account without printing it. It is just an electronic money that is not backed with anything. There is nothing to mop up there.

I disagree with your conclusion that it will lead to postponing the election and an extension of Buhari’s administration. I really don’t think that’s the intention of the president.

However, I agree with your other points and I think that’s why even Tinubu had to come out publicly to call out CBN for the shambolic way the Naira redesign is being handled. Hopefully, we won’t see a riot next week if the deadline is not extended.

This policy will go a long way to reduce vote buying, I need you to acknowledge that obvious fact.

I dont because it won't. If this was its intent, it has been badly botched. Everyone seems to think that people are paid on the day

Meanwhile the tracking of bvn outflows would have been the better option. Together with the US warnings, this type of data would have been a serious deterrent to vote buying. This strategy? Has holes so big, you could drive a bullion van through it.

It has reduced kidnapping though, I give it that.

Because you don't want to see how it will make cash flow difficult for election riggers doesn't mean it won't.

no one is buying votes for bloc votes, voting buying will be employed in swing states and to ensure that some candidates get the required 25% acceptability as described in the constitution.
As little as this maybe, it can affect the outcome of the election big time
You do not get it.

Economic reasons or end time reasons??
End time reasons, bro. It us happening all over the world. We are headed to the one world digital currency and government. All government around the world are working tireless to implement it. Every other thing is mere distractions and deceptions. We are doomed, but people don't know. We are headed into digital prisons, when and where anyone who doesn't conform to the govt directives will have their accounts and lives frozen just with the press of a button. And all of our lives will be monitored for compliance.

I am not kidding you, bro. I follow a great number of end time preachers on twitter and telegram. The evidences are mind blowing. Biblical prophecies are happening live. The Euphrates River is almost dried up. Israelite is planning to unveil their King who will likely be the Antichrist or false prophet. The rare red Heifer to be used to the sacrifice by the Antichrist is available. With the covid vaccines, Satan is trying to mix his blood with mankind as "iron mixed with clay" was prophesied. But it will not mix, that's why the adverse effect are beginning to show. People are collapsing and dying on football fields, groceries, e.t.c. the world economies are collapsing. The elites are aware of the coming times. Just the people are being distracted and fooled.

I find your argument troubling but I will try my best to offer counter argument why we need to support this policy.
Everyone knows that this policy will benefit the country tremendously but inflation is not one of the benefit of this policy. This, I will give you.
The new naira will absolutely do nothing for the inflation. Inflation is about money not only cash.

It will reduce crime.
Have you ever entered Nigeria banks? Money everywhere, in bags. Why?
No economy that wants to be taken seriously will run on cash economy like Nigeria.

Before I go into details why we need to take a moment and give the policy a chance, I understand how some people are genuinely affected by this policy. These people affected does not deserve this, and this should not have happened.
Nothing that has happened or happening is new. It is all foreseeable. Are we shock that some bankers sold the cash? Are we surprised that it will take time for the cash to trickle down to rural areas? These pains are real. But we are making it worse for them.
Ask yourself this question today, do you really need 50k cash in your pocket? Most people in the town can go about their business everyday without cash. Filling stations accept POS, most popular supermarkets accept POS. Why is everyone running to the bank for cash?

Like I said from the beginning that benefits are tremendous. Wouldn't you like to live in a country where there are few bank robbery? Limited availability of naira means no more free cash to steal at the banks. Money does not only mean cash.
Low level kidnapping will decrease. If naira is scare, good luck finding N1m to withdraw cash. How will the kidnappers want their money?

Corruption will also be reduced. Money trail is a lot easier to track when it is online versus when it is cash.

The biggest argument on the side of people that are against this policy is timing or not enough time. Timing could be better but duration is more than enough. For a reference, India did same thing in 2016 under 50 days cash swap. It can be done.

In the midst of the storm, you found peace. God let your will be done.

Why sell the naira?
This artificial scarcity is not the making of CBN
