Why are you learning how to drive a manual car in 2023? It's like learning how to use a typewriter. Nigerians have this mindset that something isn't valuable until it's hard. That manual you're learning, you might never ever apply the skills once you're done with your training. And even if years later, you find yourself in a emergency situation where you'd have to use a manual car, you'd still not be able to drive it cause you'd have forgotten everything you learned. So what exactly is the point of learning how to drive a manual car?

Wait, did you say 5 days? So y'all just spend a few hours a day for 5 days and start driving in Nigeria? Learning how to drive isn't just about being able to drive a vehicle from one point to another. You need to know some basic traffic laws, the conventions, the road signs, etc. You learn all these in 5 days and still master clutch/gear engagement, steering control, reversal/packing techniques, etc.? Wow...

Meanwhile, don't ever let anyone tell you that learning how to drive automatic alone implies you cannot drive. We learned manual only cause we needed it. It's just in the nature of Nigerians to make whatever skills they suffered to acquire seem superior to modern ways of doing things. It probably makes them feel good about themselves.

AutoManual:
I went to driving school today and meant with the guys there. I told them I want to learn manual. Even when some of them was telling me manual is fading out that majority of people are preferring to learn auto and they said some people who learn manual also came back to learn auto.

My reason was that if I can learn manual I can learn automatic, because I have heard that from people, I choose 5 days learning and they said 30minus & 1 hour has different prices, but I choose the 5 days 30 minutes, although I bargain the price. I filled the form and the driving session started.

Few minutes that we started I already giving up, I feel like not learning again. My concentration was not even there it was tidius to remember all this I need to do. Because I was forgetting all the things the guy told me before we started.

Here are my problem.
1. Understanding the pendel. Little press the car if jecking. When I applied brake it stop sudden and the vehicle will off abruptly.
2. Losing focus and what to do when I'm tens specially when I am approaching junction or a big car.
3. I am more concerned with the cars at my back or around me because I was moving slowly. The guy keep telling me to forget about them and focus on my side. Is document I filled said I will be the one to pay for damages incurred during the session.
3, knowing how and when to change the gear. I haven't mastered it and I feel it's too hard with the calculations. When I was filling the form there was some disclaimer on the document that I will be held responsible for any damages. I also learnt that the break is sometimes press. It was then I understand that the guy can press the brake from his own side of the car. Although I didn't tell him but I know.

Handling the wheel. To make a turn accurately on the road or control the wheel is really off.

Look like driving is really hard with manual

I was saving and planing to buy a Nigeria use car and I was focusing on manual because I heard people saying it easy to maintain but right now with the look of things I don't think I can buy manual again oh.

The two things I thought today while on the wheel is to buy auto and a small car.

Tomorrow I will go there again to learn and keep this thread updated.
Locate a fairly big field, and start your lessons from there. Place objects to mark obstructions on the road just like in the attached pic (you can use bottle water). Do this before hitting a major road, it will certainly help you.

I was 17 when I learnt how to drive with my dad's Nissan sunny (Manual transmission)

I never went to any driving school..I got my first drivers license at 19.. I drove manual cars for over 8yrs

I drive my first automatic transmission car in 2015.. and since then, I have never ever touched a manual transmission car...

I visited eket last year, and tried to drive my cousins manual Nissan car for the first time in 7 years and guess what?

I no Sabi handle manual cars again.. come and see me struggling with this car and jerking up and down on the highway...my cousin laugh tire..

My point is this, manual transmission cars are going extinct.. just learn with automatic, it's easier and faster..because last last if u no drive manual for 5-6 yrs, anytime u jam manual cars, you will still drive like a novice

Learn automatic first. When you become a pro in it, you can come back and learn manual.

If you're a novice in driving and you just dive into manual, you'll be frustrated, your leg would pain you eh!

Don't give up just yet...there's nothing special in driving, go back to the driving school and tell them you want to learn automatic. Start from there, it's small small.
Re: I Went To Driving School Today And I'm Really Giving Up. by ibinaboonline: 10:40pm On Feb 08, 2023
I understand what's up with you. You don't need all the extra anxiety of your liability to possible damages to the car plus the need to learn as much as you can in the timed sessions (30 minutes/day, right?) On top of the anxiety of learning manual that, as you said, your colleagues have told you i's more challenging. But if you learn manual, you have already learned automatic. In any case, what you need is a friend or family member that will teach you in a relaxed atmosphere. With the anxiety associated with the school removed, you should be just fine and actually have fun with your learning. The only thing you'd miss from the school is a driver's license at the end of your lessons, which I'm sure you can still get without the school.

My point is this, manual transmission cars are going extinct..
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Automakers will keep making manual gearboxes for enthusiasts. Manyb modern supercars are actually manual for this reason. There's a reason Manufactures area still making manual versions of their cars to this day and they're actually more expensive than their automatic versions.

What you are feeling is perfectly normal, what I did back then when I was learning how to drive was to watch a lot of videos on YouTube about how to drive a manual car, it made me a lot more confident, try it

it’s not hard driving manual it’s d guy that is making it difficult for u

In manual u are working on 3 things whereas in automatic u are just working on just 1 thing

In Manual

U must master steering handling
How to change gears
How to match your clutch, brake n accelerator

In automatic
U only concentrate on how to handle d steering well cos the gears are there for u my can master it easily n no clutch

If d guy is a good teacher he should first give u an handout for u to study for like 3 days before making u near a car

He will give u d handout so u would have mastered something’s in it n u would have driven a car in your head before touching a car

I am sure he didn’t even teach u road signs n meanings

Hope say e no too charge u

hmmm, everybody na prof for Nigeria.
As far as i am concerned, if you don't know how to drive a manual transmission, you are not a complete driver.
Driving could be fun with the right people.
Just like someone advised, get a friend who owns a manual car, fuel the car during weekends, locate a field and practice your driving with his guide. Don't be in a hurry to be on the road, just take your time to cast out the spirit of fear.
After mastering your skills, drive within an estate and less busy roads with a guide beside you.
When you are done, go back to the driving school and get your driving certificate to process your driving licence.
You are also finding it hard because the driving school is after profit, the longer you stay the more money they earn. All the best.

1. Driving manual is a life skill - don’t give up
2. Everyone was a shit driver at some point, you’re not the first nor the last
3. All it takes is time, experience and consistency.

Also - try and listen to advice and tips from real drivers so you keep growing.
