Oga tenants pay your bills

…tenants whine the F too much 😡, maybe you should go price a bag of cement in todays mkt

…if them give you quit notice, you go still run come here.
That landlord has being subsidizing your electricity bills for over2years for you. The very minute he decided to get you your own meter, you run come NL.
Pls comeback after a month and tell the house if you consume less than 5k units a month!
For your mind.

PHCN has a system that allows them to deduct 10% of your electricity recharge until the outstanding arrears is paid off.

This should help fix this issue.

When one applies for a prepaid meter, PHCN will start charging you estimated billing every month until the meter comes. It is not the fault of your landlord that the meter came with unpaid bills.
Your landlord ought to have informed you that he's getting you a new meter and have you disconnected from the general meter so that you won't be paying bills to him again since you are already on the estimated billing in the incoming meter. It may not be his fault because he may not know how PHCN operate.
You are right and your landlord is also right based on his ignorance of how PHCN operates.
Taking up the matter legally, if you win, you will park out and if you lose, you will still park out. You can't take your landlord to court and still remain in his house.
I advise you clear the bill that came with the prepaid meter.
I BELIEVE YOU DIE BECAUSE THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO ME. I applied for a new meter for my tenant (two of them have been sharing a meter for a while and I wanted to separate them) and was told I'll have to separate the account so I did separation of account. It took 3 weeks for a new account number to come out and when it did, it came with an estimated billing of 38k.

I used the account number to process a meter and got the meter the following month. It took about 8 plus weeks total for everything to come together. Guess what, Ikeja Electric billed me 76k for light wey I not use.

They said that is how it is being done. I wrote to my marketer's supervisor requesting an adjustment because I DID NOT USE THE LIGHT. Na on top adjustment we dey now. IE na scam company. That is how they make their money.

P.S I carried my tenants along. Now, the one I got the meter for isn't interested in sharing the debt with me. The meter is there and hasn't been connected. Make dem dey share their meter dey go until dem grant me adjustment and I pay whatever balance is on it. I AM PAINED, I won't even lie.

From what I see, landlords know dey this thread. Na mostly people when know no how things dey work, just dey vex dey talk.

Feb 1st 2023 I requested a new account for my tenant and also told them to send me payment token for prepaid meter straight. Meaning as my acc no comes out, it would be processed for prepaid meter immediately, once I make payment for prepaid meter, max in two weeks time, my prepaid meter would be installed. This morning morning I got the following message from ikeja

The way it works, once you register a house for meter, am talking of postpaid meter, NEPA will start billing you. From my experience, after the OP's landlord registered the acc, it took the landdlordmonths before the prepaid meter was installed, due to this, the postpaid acc was billed monthly, that was while you had debt on the acc. On my own acc, nothing concern me, the tenant go pay the 16k, I opened account for the tenant, not for myself, once the 200unit when follow the prepaid meter come finish, the tenant go dey pay the debt as him dey recharge.

OP the account was opened for you guys, the landlord decided it's better he moves his tenant to there own prepaid meter because of wahala, so make una pay the debt....

The most important thing is, it's a fresh acc, meaning the postpaid acc was newly open.
You're right.

Estimated billing in my area is 38k. Not NERC cap o. Just Wetin IE dey do because they are a useless organisation.

I got the billing twice before my meter arrived and it amounted to 76k. I have requested an adjustment.

When I'm ready, I will drag my marketer and her supervisor and tell them to use NERC cap to bill me instead of the ridiculous 38k a month.

Let me tell you another funny story, I want to replace an old prepaid meter in my compound. Those first generation ones that innoson made. They said to report it as faulty so that they can come connect the light directly and give me at least a month's worth of estimated billing before I can apply for a new meter.

In other words, I can only apply for a replacement after they've certified the old meter as faulty and they've connected me directly.

"What if I don't want to be connected directly? Just commot light from meter make I apply and wait till a new meter gets here."
They said it is not possible.

I HATE IE LIKE CRAZY.
I HATE ALL OF THEM IN THAT USELESS ORGANIZATION.

There's no such thing as 6months without payment. It's a misconception that people have in their mind! You need to be going to Landlord Tenant cases in court. It's been said several times. I don't know where you people build up that concept from.
It happened in my korokoro eyes. After your yearly payment elapses , do not pay until landlord gives you a quick notice .
Till then na free you Dey , legal and binding

Freethought:
I have been on the same prepaid meter with my landlord since i came to this house 2 years ago, he charge 5k monthly for electricity and I've paid deligently for the past two years.

Last week Saturday he brought an electrician to the house to install the prepaid meter he got for both of us (me and the other tenant). We were not informed about this step until that saturday they brought the meter.

Long story short, we discovered there's a debt of 53k on the meter (estimated bill since he registered for the new meter)

Now, he's asking us to pay the bill ourselves since he collected the meter for us. Mind you, he never for once stopped collecting the 5k.

I want to believe one or two nairalanders have been through something similar to this, that's why I'm here to seek help on how to go about it.
It happened in my apartment.

I got a new place and moved in, it's a new building entirely.
The prepaid meter that came had arias of over 50k, like yours. With a preload of almost 2k(units that came with the meter). So we were asked to pay the arias of that 50k but we declined, we can't pay for what we didn't use. It was a bit of an issue for a few days.
Long story short, our andlord wrote to PHCN to rectify that arias. It's was finally done but we paid the preload of that 2k with 50% anytime we buy units, until the 2k was cleared.

So, only your landlord can take it up with these PHCN guys. If he acts unconcern, it will be your debt to pay. But trust me, that's wrong!
Re: Prepaid Meter: How Do I Handle This With My Landlord? by dinero101(m): 8:33am On Feb 14, 2023
I had an experience like this once and I totally agree with you. The 53k debt is the debt from the estimated bill, it was simply transferred because the prepaid meter is using the same meter never with the estimated bill. The landlord probably collected a new prepaid with a. We account for himself. Each time you pay for your prepaid, the money is divided 60-40 and you get 60 while 40 goes for the debt. You can simply hold a meeting with legal practitioners with your landlord present so you can have an agreement with him on how to share to money you will be paying by 60-40

ChybuzzDD:
Your explanations are not correct.
The PHCN or whatever simply transferred the old, outstanding debts from the estimated bills into the new meter.
This 53,000 is the outstanding debt for the entire occupants, including the landlord, of that building starting from when ?PHCN started bringing bills to that house.
The landlord knows this and simply wants only this guy and his colleague to inherit it.
The man might not even be adding his own part of the bill after collecting those 5,000 from the guy, which made it possible for the bill to accumulate to this extent.
What he was doing was like this: if they brought an estimated bill of like 10,000 for the entire house per month, he would collect 5000 from this guy to pay in for the month to avoid disconnection, and the arrears kept accumulating.

The guy should reject it or simply pack out, if the landlord refuses to contribute towards settling this outstanding 53,000.

nothing concern the landlord with the bill. The landlord open the account for the tenant, the tenant is to pay the bill. The only place i fault the landlord is, immediately he opened the new postpaid acc, he should have removed the tenant from the prepaid immediately and put the tenant on the direct line. Its either the landlord no sharp or the landlord wanted to pay a smart one by collecting money from the tenant while the tenant was on the prepaid line and then still leave the debt on the postpaid for the tenant.

This is also a good advice.
We are paying off 200k on our prepaid meter, part of the debt incurred before I even moved in. I didn't negotiate anything with our landlady, instead, she jacked up our rent by 20k each flat. grin grin grin
but sir , how do I negotiate with NEPA to spread the bill over time ? Do I have to go to thier office?

They would have already done that for you. My landlady has even jacked up the house rent by 50k again.

You're very correct on whether he wins or lose in court, the landlord will force him to park out. I'm in such dilemma too.. Just moved into a 2 bedroom flat and discovered when I wanted to recharge units that there is debt of 100k plus on my meter's account. Brought this development to my landlord's attention who said he has no business with it and that I should go sort it out. Now for every recharge I make, I'm being deducted 60% of the amount I pay to offset bill while I get 40% worth of electricity unit.
I won't say pim.. What I'll do is be settling of the money, when I know I am ready to move out of the apartment I will use months worth of that 100k before I move out.
Sometimes one needs to deal with unscrupulous peeps in their own coin.

I live in a house where the landlord recently installed a prepaid electricity meter for me and another tenant. Before this single meter was installed, both of us had been paying our estimated electricity bills regularly.

After the new meter was installed, we noticed it had a debt of N2m+ on it. We later found out that this debt came from the landlord’s sawmill business in his name, but he still went ahead and installed the same meter for us tenants to use. He got another one for his own apartment and wife's shop which has a debt of 200k+ on it (meter by installment).

Since the debt was already on the meter, we couldn’t recharge it or load any new electricity token. I called the DISCO to ask why, and they explained that the reason we can’t buy tokens is probably because of the large debt attached to the meter. Tried 12k, 14k, 16k but none went through.

Because of this problem, I disconnected from the meter, connected to direct, and applied for my own personal prepaid meter, which is still being processed.

Yesterday, the landlord told me to go to the nepa office to settle the issue with the indebted meter. He also said that nepa guys will soon come around to check for illegal connections or meter bypass.

He wan make me help am dey offset him incurred debt of N2m+
