Monitor lizards can be fun to have as pets,but majority of the more than 70 species and subspecies possess a venomous bite and that includes all African species.They are predators, hunting rats,birds, other small rodents,lizards,fish, arthropods.
But the world's largest lizard and species of monitor lizard, the Komodo dragon native to Komodo and Flores Islands of Indonesia preys on deer,buffalo,snakes,in addition.
Komodo dragons are capable of hunting small children left unprotected and exhibit cannibalistic behaviour.

I hate reptiles.

Sometimes Nigerians baffles me .... from the look of the animal , it is an exotic animal .... Why is it that the first thing that comes to your mind is to kill and eat it !!!!! ... You make good cash flow with this animal ... This is how a fisher man somewhere in the Eastern part of Nigeria , caught a big sword fish , killed it and ate it .... but guess what that sword fish was discovered to worth up to 3 million dollars ... , the fucker ate his future away !!! ,,, Nigerians should trying to be innovative and think beyond filling the stomach ....... The so called Monitoring Lizard is an exotic animal and i believe it can still grow more ... I have seen a lizard like this that is called commodo lizard,/ dragon, .... Why can't the owner keep this as pet and show case it on youtube , .... on a daily/ weekends take it for a walk ...while showcasing it on youtube ... the views alone can make hime some money !!!! .... Man i wonder how the black world thinks .... I rest my case ... Better still sell it to me !!!!

I like how you did this Op, I must admit.
You asked a question and then listed facts about this interesting looking creature.
My first time ever hearing about the monitor lizard was through this site.
I am terrified of the animals because of how they look and move...snake-like. They look like they could bite or sting terribly.
I saw a documentary about a particular type of people in Nigeria--and it showed the men hunting for specific animals. On what they thought was the specific animal they were hunting, was instead a monitor lizard--albeit much smaller than this one here. The one guy cut off the tail and started eating it RAW
He seemed very satisfied.
I couldn't believe it!
Anyhow, I can't see someone walking it with a leash, but then again, anything can happen in Nigeria I guess.
I, of course, would hope you'd either keep it as a pet that you could treat very well OR free it back to its natural habitat....
Notice I omitted "eating it" as an option.
Pepper soup, perhaps, without meat--but loaded with veggues-- seems nice.
However, you guys must have iron-clad stomachs to eat this type of animal...and not suffer digestion issues.
