Listerine and the other commercial mouthwashes are acidic and contain potentially cancer-causing chemicals, and are just plain bad for you.

Listerine was created in the 1870’s and was originally used as an antiseptic to reduce infections after surgery. It was also sold as a floor cleaner!

It wasn’t until the 1920’s that sales took off. A series of ads promoted Listerine as a cure for chronic halitosis (bad breath). Before the ad campaign, nobody really worried about how their breath smelled. But something about the ads resonated with people and Listerine’s sales increased in under 10 years.
That brings us up to today, where drugstore shelves are packed with an incredible variety of mouthwashes, each with a different gimmick and advertised purpose.

there are some fundamental problems with the over the counter commercial mouthwashes that you can buy in the drugstore, like Listerine. In order to make them shelf stable, manufacturers add acidic stabilizing agents. These are absolutely terrible for your teeth. The acid will actually eat away at your tooth enamel, weakening your teeth and making them more susceptible to decay..

Then there are the artificial food dyes that are used in almost all over the counter mouthwashes. Cool Mint Listerine, to give one example, contains the dye Green 3, which has been linked to bladder cancer.

When you used an antibacterial mouthwash, it kills all kinds of bacteria, even the good ones! This can be the opportunity that the hazardous bacteria need to take over and start an infection. This is known as a “rebound effect.”

One of the biggest dangers of using LISTERINE regularly is that it can make you feel like your mouth is clean when it isn’t.

Right. People who can’t/don’t want to use aka-unwu/potash also use it for recipes what call for curdled palm oil (abacha-ncha, nkwobi, isi-ewu) and to eliminate the tangy taste of tomatoes for stew (importantly you can’t really use more than half a teaspoon for that without the taste and colour becoming unappetising).

For FDA, SON, NAFDAC to allow that disgusting toothpaste that is not even good enough to use for a dog, to spread around the Nigerian community, it shows how terrible our standards are.
I rather stay without brushing for weeks than use that crap. God forbid. My respect for you just drops to -500 once I see that toothpaste in your house.

It is not hard actually. It's found in baking shops, shopping malls and the market. Very very easy to find.

You can contact me for your scaling and polishing....I lame man language ....it's called teeth washing by professional .... there's a particular machine we used to do that

Pure white teeth are not healthy but not to say you will leave your teeth to rotten like Tinubu's teeth. The best kind of teeth is milking colour, not too white not too brownish.

You are absolutely right.....my wife use baking soda at times to prepare Nkwobi sauce at home.
I use it as mouth wash ....

Yeah, I use strawberry, baking soda and a touch of vinegar sometimes for additional tooth-cleansing. I use Listerine and all that as well (a drop of peppermint essential oil doesn’t kill, either) but but baking soda is a very powerful anti-bacterial. I even use it to clean (another important indication).

Nkwobi made with baking soda oil-curdles just fine. I don’t know why some people are so against it.

They prefer the conventional way of cooking it, by using edible potash. I am always careful whenever I feel like eating Nkwobi or isi ewu outside. Some people add too much of the edible potash, when preparing the sauce. Which can trigger stomach upset.
