This is not completely true.

Everyone can be bought in Nigeria not just northerners.

Northerners believes in structure, all alhajis has many people under him and can instruct them to do his bidding without necessarily giving out money.

It's called absolute loyalty.

It'll be difficult to break this barrier as a southerner unless you negotiate with the leadership of the structure.
