it was/is about American interests, panama was a province of Colombia whose armed secession America supported and funded for American maritime interests, building the canal was an overt act of imperialism and there was little to nothing benevolent about it. It could only take a Jimmy Carter to recognize America's moral injustice and hand over the canal to Panama. Same thing i think Russia is trying to implement with Ukraine in the crimea vis-a-vis securing their Mediterranean fleet via the black sea. Don't know enough about the British parliamentary system. But given all the turmoil the last few years (multiple PM's), is it really a better system than the US? I do appreciate the debating style in Parliament though. I think what holds the US back is the electoral college and the fact states like Wyoming have disproportion representation.
