GloriousGbola:

It's actually a well-known controversy, sadly
When the Kimba vs. Simba controversy is brought up, there are two things I notice right away:

1. Most people have seen The Lion King but have not seen Kimba the White Lion (KtWL).

2. Most people think KtWL is a theatrical length movie.

So to address point 1.
Why would you even defend something that you've not personally watched?
I know that in controversial topics like this, it is easy to assume that people who are making the claim that Simba ripped off Kimba have already done their homework and as such must know what they are talking about. But, has it occurred to you that they may be ignorant or biased and as such, may not be telling you the whole truth.
A rule good rule for life is to not have strong opinions about any information you've not personally verified for yourself.

For the second point:
A lot of people think that KtWL is a 90ish minute movie, so when they see the comparisons like the one GloriousGbola Posted, it's easy to see why they'll  say that Simba copied KtWL.
But kimba is in reality made of up a Manga, TV series and lot of movies which when totaled is more than 2000 minutes in lenght.  Just keep that in mind.

This type of argument is like saying vampires exist in The Vampire Diaries and vampires also exist in Twilight, therefore, The Vampire Diaries copied Twilight.

In the same vein, when you're telling your story with animals in Africa, there will be similarities in shots and characters because the settings are similar. It isn't uncommon for common tropes to be seen in similar media.
So the fact that Lion King has a baboon and a parrot isn't really a smoking gun.

Moreover, the team that made the Lion King has always been open about where they got inspiration for the story.
According to them, they wanted to make a tale of Hamlet set in the jungle, but people like to cling to superficialities andclaim they KtWL was the real inspiration which is not true.

Now, let me bust your mind, the pictures that GloriousGbola posted are from the 1996 movie that was released 4 years after The Lion King was released on 1994.
It's likely that these shots exist because the Kimba team saw the controversy surrounding the movie also decided to cash in on it.
It's also good to keep in mind that Osamu Tezuka (the creator of KtWL)  died before the Lion King was so we don't know what he thinks about this.
However, his son has come out to say that the Lion King did not copy KtWL

Lol, if I have the money to spare, this is exactly what I'd wanna watch in the cinema. grin grin

Those premium tier sound systems, every breath, every fear, every desperation, every last bit sensation is transmitted to you in high definition. Bruh, you go feel the horror wella. 🙌🙌

Watching horror at home these days for me now somehow seems boring and hardly scary. I can't remember the last time I watched horror film and I was genuinely scared. 🙃🌚
lol i barely want to watch them at home because i have found the recent ones to be formulaic, it's like they have exhausted all ideas. you have to sieve through a load of crappy low budget one's before you can even find the one that is remotely good. I don't think it's a progressive genre, imagine they are still on about a "Evil Dead" reboot in 2023?!. Infact, they have to be mixed with some element of the thriller sub-genre for the suspense and excitement.

Coming from a Nigerian who sees people going to see brain dead Nollywood films in cinema?

Horror is a great genre of movies.
Relax your teats harmano...Horror might be a great genre but it isn't my cup of tea as i have found them to be too generic over the years. Besides this God forsaken spit of land shows me horror mixed with a side of shègè daily, so i usually have my fill 👍.

IMO Evil Dead 2013 is better than the original.

Fallacious claim. "Evil Dead" (2013) can't even lace the boots of "The Army of Darkness" (1992)" not to talk of the other two in the franchise prior.

T480s. The PC is off, I'd need to plug it to a powersource before I can use it.

Depleted means I'd have to replace it?

It is a shame that evil dead won't be released in Nigerian cinemas.

It is usually rare for horror movies to be released here.

The last one I remember was the Nun.

Can you imagine that "Get Out" wasn't released in Nigerian cinemas?
That's the painful part. Horror films hardly get released here.
This is what I would have spent good money to watch.

We're even lucky we got The Nun with all its diabolic themes. 😂

Is it superstition or what that makes the Nigerian Entertainment Industry to reject horror films?

I feel it's mainly superstition.
And who wants to go watch a demonic promoting film. 😁😁 You wan cast and bind taya for midnight. 😭😭

Also, the Nigerian entertainment sphere, in terms of movies is pretty limited. There's hardly any variety of successful genre or audience habits and preferences in the country.
Although, with time and improved standard of living as well as growing cinema culture, things might change in the future.

I still think the horror genre is the most adaptive of all. It is very malleable to suit other subgenres or themes you want to infuse.

2022 saw varieties of horror and even saw atypical horror films enjoying box office success. Even the formulaic ones were still decent.
We had Nope last year.

Evil Dead Rise and co is brought on by the fact that studios are pivoting towards audience preference for nostalgic and familiar universe. WB just wanna cash out after seeing things from rival Universal studio with Halloween Ends, Scream, Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Barbarian etc....

In my opinion, I feel the quality of horror films has improved in the last two years. We've been feeding good on good content. Tho some are formulaic, we still get some pretty good originals like X franchise. The formulaic ones from top studios are mostly good. So it's a win for the genre as audience interest seems to have increased in the last few years.

Is JW4 showing in Nigerian cinemas this weekend?
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by abduleez1(m): 1:42pm On Mar 25, 2023
I feel Pixar's ELEMENTAL is gonna end up like Disney's Strange World.

Look at the competition. It's unlike before where studios would be afraid to compete with a Disney/Pixar animated movie and pull out movies from that calendar. That film is most likely getting murdered by Flash, Transformers: Rise of the Beast, Indy 5 and will compete with Sony's SpiderVerse and DreamWorks' Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

Oyaskii, what do you think of this??

Streaming ONLY corporations are slowly pivoting towards traditional studio leanings.
This is somehow echoing the fact that streaming business is an expensive endeavour and you might not be profitable for years for upstarts.
I like how Amazon and Apple are pivoting towards this model. Only Netflix seems to be adamant and committed to the binge model (well it's been working for them).

I see Sony and A24 benefiting from this.

The Streaming business whilst been profitable has a whole set of problems that depletes profits. A blockbuster could get a "VOD" only release but like 100 people will see it with just one account via password sharing and believe it or not even "password hacking". Netflix tried to clamp down on it last year i think and they were met with fierce rebuttal.

So this move by Apple is a way to even the playing field a little. Pump money on prod for big titles, have a theatre only run for some time, make some money, release it on VOD and make more money. It's the only economically feasible way for streaming companies to compete with conventional production houses. Heck, i think the plan has been in motion for some time, cuz movies are now having shorter gaps between theatre releases and VOD, i mean, I don't think "Creed" III is barely in the cinemas for up to a month and is already available to stream as early as next week.

The COVID-19 lockdown saw a surge in streaming and Cinema entity has not fully regained thier balance since then, so i think these model suites all parties involve.

Funny enough, Netflix have been striking these kind of deals in recent years albeit in a small scale and low budget movies, the movie has a limited theatre run, then releases exclusively on thier platform to stream.
