Bendel Insurance extended their unbeaten streak in the Nigeria Premier Football League to six games after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Nasarawa United on Wednesday night.

The Benin Arsenals have now won six and drawn two of their eight games so far this season.

Ebuka Akobundu scored the decisive goal on 52nd minutes.

Akobundu unleased a powerful shot inside the box which beat Nasarawa United goalkeeper, Jerry Isaac.

Insurance maintained top position in Group A with 20 points from eight matches.

In Aba, Red-hot Emeka Obioma bagged a brace in Enyimba’s 2-0 win against Shooting Stars.

Obioma opened scoring for the People’s Elephant with a header on second minutes.

The forward netted the second goal late in the first half after he was set up by Ekenne Awazie.

He is now top scorer in the NPFL with seven goals from eight games.

NPFL Goes On Three-Week Break For General Election; May Return To Tv




The 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, will proceed on a three-week break at the halfway mark of the abridged league format season after this weekend’s match day nine matches, Completesports.com reports

The break will enable the clubs to refresh and enable players and officials to participate in the General Election 2023 scheduled for Saturday, February 25 and March 11 2023.


“Yes, I can confirm that the NPFL will go on break for three weeks after the match day nine games. We’ll resume after the Nigerian elections for the final stage of the abridged league, ” Davidson Owumi, Head of operations of the Interim Management Committee IMC, told Completesports.com on Thursday.
“We are putting every effort to ensure that the league drives itself. It’s been hectic, but I think we have done well and if we get more sponsors and partners, the clubs and other stakeholders will benefit from it and the league will progress to the level we envisage.


“The IMC is discussing with DStv to return NPFL on cable TV, Supersport channels. I can confirm to you that we are making progress and very soon Nigerians and the world will be able to view more matches and attract more interest in the league, ” Owumi, a one-time Nigerian league top goal scorer stated.

On clubs getting a balance of N250 million from the IMC, Owumi said: “I cannot say with all certainty how much and when money will be paid to the clubs. It depends greatly on the extent of investment brought in by sponsors. It could even be double that, but it depends on what comes in.”

Owumi urged critics to be objective in accessing and analysing the NPFL and the IMC, stressing that objective criticism will spur the clubs, players, match officials and league managers to perform better.

He advised that critics should not personalise issues, noting that even the best leagues in the world are not perfect.

The league could not start as scheduled and so will not end when other leagues will end, so therefore..

1. The league will run as an abridged this 2022/2023 this to enable them finish the league on time to produce Nigeria's representative for CAF competitions

2. Its also done as an abridged to enable the calendar align with others league and Europe..

Each with ten teams, the top 3 from each group will proceed to do a playoff or what we call super 6 and the winner announced as the final league winner

Obioma, Odigie win NPFL Player, Coach of the Month award

Enyimba forward, Chukwuemeka Obioma has won the Nigeria Premier Football League Player of the Month award for February.

Obioma scored four goals in the month, including two against Shooting Stars at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

The striker is currently the top scorer in the NPFL with seven goals.


He beat Osarenkhoe Imade, Uche Collins, Joseph Atule,Robert Mizo and Amas Obasogie to the award.

Bendel Insurance head coach, Monday Odigie won the Coach of the Month prize.

It’s the second time the former Golden Eaglets gaffer will be winning the award this season.

Insurance won three and drew two of their five matches last month.

The Benin Arsenals are the only team yet to taste defeat in the NPFL this season
