The intention was good. The message was good. It's clearly a dig at the political structure of Lagos and how a "certain someone" has Lagos in his palms with youths wasting their lives fighting for those in power and dying for nothing.

Unfortunately, Nigerians don't learn from their movies.

The problem with the movie however is the execution. The writing has way too much flaws. The characters act in absurd ways. Several characters just feel like they're there for nothing.

Gangs Of Lagos "2023"

Isale Eko ni ile mi!

The first "Amazon original" Nigerian movie fully flexed this title with delicate finesse. It had probably the highest production value for a Nigerian movie i have seen in a long while. The "Amazon Studio" polished input was clearly visible... Stunning cinematography even the "trenches" was vividly represented with impeccable details leaving you with shots you could frame and hang in the Louvre, the other technical merits were in the upper percentile, well choreographed fight scenes, fantastic set design, great props and a cast that contained amateurs but clearly know what they were doing.

The plot has become cliched in recent Nollywood library and the producer and chief writer did "Brotherhood" 2022, and the similarities between both in terms of plot is so similar that i felt she had her work cut out writing this, she even had the same lead in Tobi Bakre, albeit this wasn't as "Water tight" as "Brotherhood" but it was still able to pass on the message.

A side note, having seen "Shanty Town", Brotherhood and this, they don't seem to end with any "Light in the tunnel", the thuggery, politicking, etc just continues only the players change, prefers reflecting the current abysmal and rotten state in Nigeria in all spheres that isn't looking like having any reprieve in the nearest future, Art imitating life i guess.... Brilliant... brilliant... Filmmaking if you ask me.

All in All, the plot is cliché but the performance of the actors and the unusually high production value for a Nigerian motion picture sees it through.

Just like phronesis said, The Flash is very possible for this sort of pull.

Aquaman did it not too long ago. I believe if DC starts gaining the trust of general audience and with consistent top quality pics we'd get there.

I'm not fretting much since Zaslav is betting big on DC to be WB's premier offering and revenue push... Some projects in Gunn's lineup looks interesting and I'm yet to see a teamup movie with big characters.

Not many movies will make this much money. Even Disney upcoming animations don't have this much promise.

Of course, Dune is made for a different audience.
It's wait and see. Dune 2 will surely be amongst Hollywood biggest earners this year I believe.

It looks like high $600mn to $750mn plus if it overperforms.

Turns out families (parents and kids) have been waiting an awful amount of time to go out and see a family movie since January. And Mario just happens to perfectly offer that at the moment. It's just pent up demand.

Mario has a ton of popularity worldwide of you don't know. Even adults into their 50s knows that universe well. So it's set up for success and Universal do know how to market their animation.
If I had the time and some extra bucks, it's a movie I'd sure like to watch in theatres. That's how impressed I was with the trailer.

Flash cannot pull Super Mario numbers. I highly doubt it.

Even if The Flash is a spectacular movie with overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences, there's no chance of a billion dollars.

The Ezra Miller situation, the lack of interest in DCEU and "superhero fatigue" are tough hills the Flash must climb to be successful.

If it pulls anything close to $800m, WB should celebrate.

Even the MCU will not get a billion dollar grosser this year.

Murder Mystery 2: 6/10
Genre: Comedy/Thriller

There was actually no mystery here to solve. The first movie definitely had the elements of mystery and comedy fused together, here they just played it safe. It's was definitely more of comedy than mystery.

For the comedy alone, it's a solid 6 for me.
