But then-

Are you aware that former accountant general of the federation (Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla) has had his membership certificate and license to practice; withdrawn by ICAN?

So when he was the accountant general, he looted the federation account. Afterwards, in order to avoid prosecution, he returned 6 billion Naira to the FG. Stealing is against the ethical standards of ICAN, and also he had not behaved with integrity in his role as the Acct general of the federation.

For years, ICAN invited him in respect to petitions received regarding his conduct in his role as the accountant general, but he shunned the institute with utter disrespect and ridiculed the institute by absolutely disregarding it.

So, ICAN told him to return his membership certificate and that if he does not return it in 3 months from March, 2023, his name is automatically struck off from the institute membership register. If he does comply accordingly along with some other consequences, the withdrawal of the certificate and license to practice will be only for a decade.

The fellow is a made man, and has no need of the institute certificate, it also appears, he has no need of his own reputation. The institute on the other hand although have had its reputation soiled or sullied by the conduct of Mr Otunla, the institute, however by its decision to withdraw the certificate is redeeming or salvaging what is left of its own reputation.

If Mr Otunla is truly repentant and wasn’t just stitching loose end by his decision to return some of the funds he looted, he would then have also in good faith, disclose to us, those whom, he allowed to loot us of billions more. Mr Otunla is the reason our hospitals are in terrible shape, he is the reason our roads are in a terrible state, he is the reason FG has borrowed billions and put your unborn generation under the burden of servicing loans, which were only looted by Mr Otunla and his cohorts. Yet, you do not even know his name.

That said, Is it the end of journalism in Nigeria if the aforementioned information is not newsworthy ‘?’ because while there is time to talk about Portable, you will not even see or hear of any follow-up with officials such as the acct general who have cases of financial misappropriation.

It appears the media in Nigeria is complicit in proof of such invisibility, and the media not paying attention or choosing to disregard such reprimands - is only serving to provide incentive for public officials engaging in looting and other repugnant behaviors for which, it is the masses that is robbed and shall pay - either with their lives or with an utter diminished quality of the life they are suffered. In saner climes, the media might help create awareness about the conduct, and even serve a pressure group function in calling for such professional consequences for officials involved in such practices- but no, the air time is better spent on Portable. ‘His story will provide a better return and more engagements, and we will still be in the good books of Mr Otunla.’
