Harry Belafonte, the singer, actor and human rights activist has died at home in Manhattan, New York, aged 96.

He is one of the most successful African-American pop stars in history, he scored hits with Island In The Sun, Mary's Boy Child and the UK number one Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).

But his greatest achievements were as a campaigner for black civil rights in the US.

This is one of the songs that I thoroughly enjoy playing. In the 1970s and '80s you would have been forgiven for thinking that it was originally done by the Pacelli School for the Blind because their band performed it at virtually all the events that they attended.

Harry Belafonte was a legend.
RIP

I remember his rendition of "unchained melody".
I think it was originally by the Righteous Brothers.
What was his relationship with that group?

Harry Belafonte invited her to the US to perform and she went there, but the Apartheid Government of South Africa revoked her passport. Many African countries offered her citizenship and Belafonte helped her in the US. She performed on the Ed Sullivan Show and she also performed before President Kennedy. She was ill when she performed in front of President Kennedy, so she went back to her hotel immediately afterwards, but the President wanted to meet her, so Harry Belafonte sent a car to go and bring her back.

This love song was already popular in Tanzania, but it was not known elsewhere. Mama Africa made it popular worldwide.

The version in the second video (with Harry Belafonte) made her the first African to win a Grammy Award (at the 8th Grammy Awards in 1965). She also won the Best World Album award at the 2000 Grammys and she was nominated in 1960, 1963 and 1964.

I remember that she was one of two foreigners to win an award at the Nigerian Music Awards, but I can't remember who the second person was. She won a Legend/Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1990 Nigerian Music Awards at the National Theatre in Lagos.
