He got it made cos you're paying him a miserable 35K a month?

Go to the UK or any sane country and pay your gatemen 35K and see if you will not be arrested and charged to court by the government for using slave labour! angry
So salaries are the same around the world?
Do you know what doctors make in the US compared to the UK? Even doctors make considerable more than their counterparts in Canada just across the border or even worse in Mexico.
Comparing Nigeria with UK is moronic anyway.
Pls get a grip on world reality.

Nigerians Will Employ A Chef And Turn Him Into Nanny, Gateman For N17,500 - BBNaija’s Tochi

Big Brother Naija star, Tochi, has called out Nigerians who overwork their domestic staff, IGBERETV reports.

In a post shared on his Instastories, Tochi stated that a Nigerian will employ a chef and use him or her for other domestic activities while paying the person a static salary.

His post read;

Although it is very bad but this type of post are useless. If you can't cope, leave! This type of post instigates hatred. There are few domestic workers who choose to add other chores to their job description. It only falls down to their boss to appreciate them. Some bosses also helps their domestic workers with money outside their supposed salary. Should we say they also overdid or performed out of their supposed agreed wages? Life is give and take. If you know you are not enjoying your job, please quit. There is no harm working outside your job description. May God bless us all

only an ignorant domestic staff would be over worked without bonuses, every domestic staff has rights and should list those rights in agreement before starting a job,if your job is the gate the gate is your job if your job is cleaning and cooking, then thats your job, domestic staff should set the boundaries and bonuses to be paid for extra job.if the owner does not settle with the agreement you can go dont be enslaved, you could sustain serious injuries doing extra job in a house and still get no bonus for it,total bs,let home owner , higher their security, gardener and house help separately, except if an individual accept to do all those jobs.when i started my job in 2012 in Lagos,i was direct at my boss,i made it clear that i wont have anything to do with something out of my job description if he wasn't alright with it i would take my leave,he accepted my terms with no hesitation, until the time i left i have never done an side job for my boss even though he gave me accommodation, only people with low self-esteem get trampled upon.

Anyone who collects 17k naira is not a "Chef". Just a hungry cook that is desperate for work. Or a desperate job seeker willing to do anything for work, including cooking, and not because it is their core skill.

I know one in Enugu here. He is a carpenter. He came from one of the neighbouring states to work in one construction site as a carpenter. He got a job as a security/gateman in one of the houses occupied by yahoo boys. I tried to convince him to leave the place but he told me he gets more than his salary(N20k) as tip from those boys. The last time the man saw his family was in December. According to the man, they buy him food and also gift him used TVs, clothes and Standing fans

Is 35K salary a living wage?

In actual fact anyone who cannot afford to pay his gateman at least 80K has no business employing a gateman but most Nigerians like to show-off that they have domestic staff who depend on them for sustenance angry

Offer and acceptance is what is known as a contract. If the wage is unacceptable, don't accept the offer! Even big companies have their warehouse/production lines in Asian countries because the labor is cheaper compared to Europe or the USA. Not everything is sentimental, some decisions are strictly logical.

With that said, I can't remember any domestic staff collecting less than 25k per month in Lagos right now, maybe for North or East sha, Lagos ones don receive update tey tey grin grin

My gateman doesn't even do anything. I'm 90% percent of the time not at the house. He lives there for free and even brings his friends to stay with him once I'm out of the country. Basically, he sleeps there just so that someone will be there, nothing more. He's doing other work once I travel out. Considering Nigeria's economy and the salaries for other workers, 35k is good money for a gateman.
Even in the West, your most significant expense is housing/rent/mortgage. That's already taking care of him and his friends.
Yes, anyone will like to make more, but 35k is not bad.

I have experienced something like this. I was once a gate man in a hotel. The director turned me to a carwash, security guard, gate man, gardener, labourer and generator attendant for a paltry 25k / month. I quit the job 2 months ago when I got a better job as a hotel manager with a better pay.

Concerning the second boldened text, that is the situation tochi was trying to iron out. No sane person would really agree to a contract of doing numerous house chores where clearly he or she is only after a certain role. It’s a sad situation and it happens everywhere in this country. An employer would employ you for a certain role (maybe Chef at the case is from the topic) at a certain amount but months into the Job, they start to add to your role without any considerable monetary implication.

That's how I applied for a job and they turned me an accountant, adminstrative staff, in-house supervisor, farm and poultry supervisor, travelling overseer, book-keeper, computer engineer, and auditor. You'd imagine I was paid for all these! Never, they paid for just the job description I applied. I Kuku resign cos my neck was already carrying a malnourished big head cos of overstress.

The worse is they'll still behave like they are doing you a favour!
