Benue Assembly Suspends Sitting Over Unpaid Salaries by FunkyAlhaji2015(op): 9:16am On May 12, 2023
Members of the Benue state House of Assembly have suspended sitting over the non-payment of their six-month salary arrears and allowances.

Following the suspension of plenary, the controversial Executive Pension Bill sent to them by Governor Samuel Ortom for approval is on hold.

The bill which has been faulted by Governor-elect Hyacinth Alia, grants former Governors of the state permanent accommodation and four new cars every four years.

The bill, which has passed its first reading, also proposes the hiring of six personal staff for former governors and three for former deputy governors.

It also provides free medical treatment for the past governors, their spouses and at least four of their children under 18.

A member of the House. Bem Mngutyo, told The Nation yesterday that they “resolved not to sit until our emoluments and salaries are paid.”

Mngutyo who revealed that the outgoing governor met with the Peoples Democratic Party caucus of the House last weekend over the issue, said he promised to pay the arrears of allowances and salary with the state’s May federal allocation before he exits office in 18 days.

I'm happy the governor is dealing with them too. Theirs is just 6month unpaid salaries, civil servants are owed over 10 months salary arrears while pensioners are owed 62months of pension arrears. Ortom is the worst thing to ever happen to Benue State

They should add 15 days hunger strike to the suspension of sitting.
Ortom is truly an incompetent governor who used insecurity as a subterfuge for his bad performance.
Meanwhile, the law makers should go and collect manual from the civil servants and pensioners on survival tactics.

He is the most underperformed governor, ahead of Ikpeazu, but he was a darling to some set of less thinking individuals because he supported who they supported.

You see Ortom, Ikpeazu and Bello they were not impeached because we are not ready for good governance, they are not good for anything.

They won't pass they bill, they are just trying to be in the good books of the new governor

The are not owed anything, they don't just want to pass the useless bill that will benefit the looting Governors, so they must come with a blackmail to make the looting governor look so foolish.

They did not pass the bill just because they don't want to, they did it so that they can get favour from the new governor. The Executive,Legislature and Judiciary are thieves.

How have they been surviving in the last six month? This to me is an attempt to hold the Gov by his sc***um. He pays them, they sign his bill.

As if the houses and cars are not provocative enough, what level of greed will make a former governor turn his entire family to the liability of the state?

These pension laws for Ex Governors from Lagos to Borno should be repealed everywhere in the country.

Not even now the the country borrow from anywhere to finance basic things.

Greed is ingrained in some people's DNA.
