Not giving public holidays to employees are rampant nowadays especially private companies like supermarkets, fuel stations, E-commerce etc. Working from Monday to Saturday/Sunday and when everybody is at home for the holidays, you don't have any choice than to still go to work. Is this slavery or we don't have good leadership to fight for their people.

it all depends on A) what kind of business you are in (many businesses are open on public holiday thus no public holidays for their staff) and/or B) the type of contract you signed. you had a choice and you decided to agree to work on public holidays, so why complain now?! C) how can it be slavery when you are allowed to quit when ever you desire? if you dont like the job, then go get a job that you desire, et voila!

If the firm forces her workers to work on public holidays without paying them overtime allowances, then that's slavery.
All businesses can't shutdown during public holidays, the economy may crumble. Imagine all hospitals and Pharmacies sparogatively going on public holidays.
Anyways, Nigerian government need to set up a board to regulate and checkmate businesses run by Lebanese, Indians, Koreans, and Chinese. Those foreigners often treat their Nigerian workers like low budget slaves, yet pay them peanuts as salary. It's like they all studied how to be modern day slave masters in their countries and passed with distinctions.
The worst part is that they even make their Nigerian workers call them "Master"
...see Slave, see Master.

Conventionally it is not
Normally they work on shift ( working climes)
Essential worker on shift should not be observing holidays

Well, most companies I know rotate their staff with days off.

An essential business like Pharmacy, Hospital, Supermarket can't just shut down businesses because of public holidays.

Nigeria is sooo backwards abeg. In abroad if you open your store especially the big stores on a bank holiday you be paid a double per hour for working that day. Not only stores even other organisations. Anything that will take you to work on a bank holiday is double of your hourly pay.

The nature of the job matters. Just like mine you can be called even on Christmas day if there is emergency on the field. While our field workers are always on site although they may rotate it

Hmmmm it is well.
Government need to promulgate laws that should make it mandatory for employers in the private sector to give their workers public holiday.

Some Businesses can't simply close on Public Holidays, so the owners pay the workers separately for that day (not included in normal salary) to encourage or thank them for coming on Public Holidays.

💯

If you want to enjoy public holidays, get a government job! 😏

Even on the government job, essential services’ workers are still made to work on public holidays.
Bank sef, people wey dey manage the ATM and network have to somehow be on ground. 🤧

Not forgetting, when you have your personal business, you can allow your staff ALL the public holidays… 😁😊

It all depends on the terms of contract/agreement (written or verbal).

But normally, public holidays must be observed because it is a total disregard to government directive if otherwise, except for some essential services.

Slavery is defined by the abrogation/arrogation of another person's free will, meaning they are not able to freely decide not to start and stop employment. That's it.

If a person is at liberty to take or reject a job then that job, no matter how harsh, is not slavery.

Also, you're actually not entitled to public holidays as of right. You're entitled to annual leave and sick leave but public holidays are subject to your employer.
