This project is a complete Urban Renewal of some parts of Eket Urban,
which include remodeling of certain roundabouts, expansion and dualizing of some major roads,
fixing of some Streets,
Erosion and flood control projects(under ground drainage systems),
construction of a 600-seater Amphitheater,
fixing of street lights and beautification, etc.

I personally cannot hate the Igbo because they have not hated me as a person, I don't know if they have hated other of our people. I schooled in Igbo land, they didn't hate me. The only problem for some of them which I don't consider to be anything was downgrading other tribes, thinking they're higher than others or wiser than others, but when they come closer to you they see that you are not what they told them or what they portrait you as. That is wen they become your friend and started revealing what they thought you are before to you.

To me, Lagos doesn't rank high enough when mentioning "well paved roads". Akwa Ibom, Abuja, and Kano have smoother (well paved) roads than Lagos.

Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kaduna and Lagos come close by slightly behind the states mentioned above.

Is not all about building water fountain. Edo state built but they can't sustain it because the maintenance cost is over whelming. (They have been running the fountain on diesel) what doesn't have economy impact.

So can eket sustain the water fountain?

While there may be some questions about the overall economic benefit of some projects (e.g. sports stadia) there isn't any doubt about projects like transport infrastructure. Good roads make it quicker to move men and materials to market. Good roads reduce wear and tear on vehicles and keep costs down. Good roads (and other infrastructure) attracts investors - it doesn't automatically guarantee investment but it is a selling point. To call a good road network a growth enabler isn't a soundbite.

Now...if we want to raise questions about the ethics or transparency surrounding these projects...that's a separate conversation altogether - and it is a conversation that must be had. Were the tenders for these projects transparently done? Did the contract award process meet best practices?...These are legitimate, compulsory questions that should have been asked by lawmakers before the project was approved and executed. Whether this was done is anybody's guess.

What do you mean by has standard of living improved?. How else does government recirculate money if not through projects?. Do you know how many youths of the state and Eket. L. G. A that would have been employed by the company handling the job both directly and indirectly?. Do you know the multiplier effect on the economy of the locality and the state at large?. Do you know that goods and services will be sold to the company handling the job?. That means contractors, subcontractor and businesses will also smile to the bank. How else does economy grow?. If you don't know the importance of the road then it tells how old you are. When we talk about economic enablers we're not saying it for the benefit of politicians. For instance companies and businesses that are wishing to invest in any location would first factor in economic enablers like security of lives and properties/investment, road accessibility, electricity, taxation etc.

I beg to disagree with you on the bolded. Every sector of the economy is critical depending on how you see it. Let's say a governor awarded a contract to open a road where there's no businesses or residential homes.
The project won't be tagged useless because the idea is to open up the place and attract investments there. The value of the lands there will appreciate. Houses will start springing up there because it has motorable roads. Good roads attracts investments that's my point

This governor is doing excellently well.

I hope to visit that beautiful State especially Uyo.

Obong Attah came up with the master plan for the metropolis, conceived the Airport, Refinery, Econet investment etc
Obong Akpabio, ran with that vision & put the the state in 'limelight' & more importantly developed people(built capacity)
Mr Udom Emmanuel has done a lot in infrastructure
My prayer is for the next administration to take it a notch higher

I'm not sure what you mean by critical places or sectors. Every state in Nigeria has hundreds of communities, settlements etc. in both urban and rural areas. These places need roads to connect to other places. Sure - some places may have larger populations than others, or some places may have bigger sub-economies than others - or some places are more "important" than others for some reason (and I guess this where your yardstick of "criticality" comes in) - but ultimately every place needs roads to connect to other places. It is hard to believe but governments in this country do have criteria for projects.

On the bit about awarding contracts to cronies - I am in agreement with you on that. Unfortunately that is where lawmakers are failing in their oversight function.

Again - we are looking at the weakness of our institutions and the failure of our lawmakers to do their duty. The lion's share of the blame however, lies at the feet of voters for failing to hold their governments (executive, legislative etc.) accountable.

An intentional and focused plan by government (not a specific governor or even administration) over 10-20-40 years should yield measurable indices.

Good roads attract investments is a song we have been signing since 1960 or 1999. I don't disagree with you, but what is the impact of these good road year on year or over time in relation to these investments (public or private sector)?
And how have these investments impacted the community or people (financially and socio-economically)?

A simple example we used at a Think Tank I worked with in Washington DC is how has the location and investment of a Cement factory in Obajana, Kogi or the one in Ewekoro/Sagamu, Ogun impacted the local communities (20km radius)?

Has life improved for the people living there? Are they more prosperous? Are there records of improved socio-economic infrastructure in those communities? Has trade and technical skills improved in the people? Is housing (cement is a big component of housing) cheaper after establishment of these project? Has quality of construction recorded an uptick or people are still building anyhow?

I can ask the same question about the Lagos - Kebbi Rice Project (I was part of this while in Nigeria). Has the project recorded any impact on rice production? Have the rice farmers in Kebbi become more wealthier? Is there an improved value-chain industry around the Rice Mill in Imota. area of Lagos?

Another example is the Tomato Paste Factory in Kadawa, Kano State. The plant cannot operate more than 20% capacity because there are no transport network to get tomatoes to the plant. Instead, tomatoes perish all over Nigeria farm lands, while we still import tomato paste through Apapa ports. Kano, Taraba, Gombe and Bauchi States are on the list of the 10 States with highest tomato growers in Nigeria. These States and their Governors (PLUS FG sef) don't have a transport/logistics plan or network (or is lacking).

Ask anybody that exports anything out of Nigeria how horrible and difficult it is to move things from point A to point B. We all read of how it is so bad to move goods from Apapa Ports 20km inland by truck costing more than it cost to ship from China, 22,000 kms away.

NGOs and Corporate Nigeria and Development Partners and other foreign Countries donate towards UBE and Schools and all these many things yearly. Is there an improved quality in students over the past 10 years?

Across many sectors, things are not interconnected in an intentional way to create wealth for the country. Everyone is just doing big and mighty things in their backyard without a plan to see how everything can work to feed each other.

The Lekki Refinery comes on stream in the next months, how will the refined products go inland? Are we repeating the nonsense that trucks created in Apapa around Lekki - Sagamu axis again?

All the Free Trade Zones and Cargo Airports many governors establish and build in the past 20 years have not added to Nigeria's GDP. Or what is the impact of the FTZs on the host communities?

So if a governor builds or rehabilitates a road and puts water fountain and street light (a country with no stable power) it makes me upset. Those are truly not what we need to improve the life of everyday Nigerians.
