Whenever I want to make the mistake of letting my guard down in this city, I paraphrase what a foreigner said in an article about Lagos some years ago:

"There is a sculpture of 3 men (probably titled chiefs) at the old toll gate with a sign saying "This is Lagos". Other big cities worldwide usually have signs saying "Welcome to so and so". With Lagos it is different. The words are ominous, threatening and they tell you all you need to know".
