this just goes to show how tough it is to live in Nigeria

I was averaging about 5k/day to fuel my generator and I even have solar at home.

I will suggest you get another side hustle to boost your income because I do not see 'girlfriend' expenses in your list..hmmmmm

Your fueling is too high, N180k and 50k for car and generator respectively for a month is very exorbitant. Consider changing car to more fuel efficient car and getting solar energy in your house.

It's not possible, I agree but, if you are living above 65% of your income, then you're not ready for the Wealth journey. Every self made millionaire/billionaire will tell you that at some point they lived below their means.

My dear. Nigerians don't have savings. Bank industry statistics agrees on this. Nigerians are only eating from hand to mouth. 80% of Nigerians don't have 500,000 Naira savings

Lol, I don't know what outing, sit out and restaurant is still doing on your list. You are not ready yet.

Clothing and foot wear shouldn't be a monthly expense for now, why not quarterly instead?

Repairs and maintenance of what? Your car or household items?

Your feeding cost alone is making me raise my eyebrows, do you eat out?
I personally felt his feeding cost was small.

Ahh.. i cant give N40,000 oooo.. it is inside the N10,000 gift monthly.
This is why your money will never be enough for you.

So long as you think God's 10% should be sidelined, bills & occurrences that justify gulping your income will continue to come up.

Obey Godly principles. They're there for a reason.

Try a 3-month faith-inspired responsibility by paying your tithe first before allocating to other things.

Try it for 3 months, and you'll see the difference.

I was born and raised in Lagos, my family owns rental buildings and I have good idea of renting in Lagos.

There are many moderate neighbourhoods within the mainland he can get a cool 2 bedroom apartment for N700k.

A bachelor earning N400k monthly, paying for a N1.3m apartment makes no economic sense and if he was a relative of mine, I would ask him who is he wasting money to impress?
I don't know about the mainland, but that rent is the new reality for the island.

And trust me, that 1.3m isn't for a fancy or ultra-modern 2-bed.

There are so many things that increase the cost of a house in Lagos

The estate
Nearness to the road
Demand in that vicinity

These things make so much of a difference in the amount the landlord/caretaker pegs the rent at.

My landlady recently increased my rent and I started casually looking at options to decide if I wanted to leave. But the prices humbled me, and I'm deciding to pay the new rent.

Right now, the only way the OP can make a significant adjustment to have more budger bandwidth is to move to a studio apartment. He'll pay 500-600k for rent.

A room and parlour would be between 900k to 1.1m

Lool I didn’t see Tithe in the list, no wonder your take home is not taking you home. (Some people would come and bash me, here is an opinion from someone whose take home, reaches home and still get energy to waka round the area).

1) Settle God first, 10% (sow on a good ground - try Living Faith Church. After 3 months if you don’t see any God level doings in your life - change church)
Wow!!! You gave him just the exact advice I did.

The exactness of thought is amazing.

When he begins to honour God, he'll find wisdom to better structure his finances.

He won't also run into problems that take more of his money.

People always think they don't have enough, so tithing should be jettisoned. What they don't understand is that you give God first and then He'll rebuke the devourer....and He'll supply the rest of your needs according to His riches.

Everything about your list is wrong and overbloated, including the least expensive items like hygiene maintenance.

Why are you spending 10k every month as a guy on hygiene maintenance? You dey do menstruation?

How much is your toothpaste and body/hair cream again and how often do you change these items? E no good to dey pass boundary, sincerely. Buy Nivea of 2,500 and add Soul mate hair cream of N500-N1000. I use these items for months.

And then you spend too much on fuel/maintenance. Do you have to drive everyday?
10k hygiene maintenance isn't a lot.

How can he possibly use one deodorant for months?

Last I checked, a deodorant spray is an average of 2k.

Body spray- 3500

Toothpaste - 1000

Irish Spring for the month - 1000

Beard & pubic grooming- 3k

And whatever else I may have omitted.

Really? I know a very broke “tither”.

Why should one be tithing when he/she can hardly feed? Does that make any sense?

I imagined that a body spray priced at 3,500+/- should last for a minimum of two months for someone with a dedicated home office. I assumed he spends most of his time working at home.

I use Irish Spring. While I'm uncertain about the current price, the 3-in-1 pack used to cost less than 1,800 (I understand there are different kinds and varieties). 1 bar should last for approximately one month.

I also imagined that a single guy should be able to use a large tube of toothpaste for well over 4 weeks. Closeup fans like me still get 1 large tube for N500-600.

Considering the cost of beard and hair grooming, the 10k might be justified. Initially, I didn't take that into account.

Most of the responses to the poster's problem, I must say, are out of context. The op is not telling us what he has been spending. He is projecting his budget based on the new fuel price.

I see people telling him his car is bad to gulp 35k fuel a week. Guys, a simple Toyota Camry has 70litre tank, to fill up in the past was 14k average, now it costs 35k!!!! It will still finish within a week, especially with Ajah traffic.

I think the problem is the post is too premature. If you had posted this by June ending, the responses would have been very different. Bus fare from Oshodi to ajah this morning was 1500 one way. Imagine you go 3-4k on public transport daily, you will understand the budget.

Una dey play!!!
I considered the new reality.

He said N180k for fuel in his car and N50k fuel for gen + N10k PHCN.

This tells me that he is going to work everyday. Yet, he uses 100litres for gen in a month.

Consider that he also rented a 2 bed at Ajah at N1.3m pa because of his home office.

So he pays huge rent, yet didn't leverage on that for proximity to the office.

People typically pay huge rent for proximity to the office which reduces cost of transportation (fuel/ bus fare) and time of commuting: he is gaining neither.

If he is all day on the road/office, how long is he at home to consume 100liters of fuel via gen and still spend N10k (about 170units of electricity)? If he doesn't go to the office everyday to justify the gen usage and home office, he wouldn't send so much fueling his car.

If the home office is for his side hustle, how long does he spend there daily considering he leaves the house by 5am everyday and returns earliest 7pm if he leaves the office 5pm sharp?

He doesn't cook at all so do not expect he has a freezer or electric stove.

There is something not adding up.

Tithe isn't compulsory. Show me any part of the New Testament that promotes tithe. You have allowed pastors to brainwash you.

Tithe is a Judaism doctrine, not a Christian doctrine.

The recommendation of the new testament is that every man should give according to what he has decided in his heart (2 Cor. 9:7)
You guys think you're theologians, but you're actually anti-Christ.

You have no idea what fulfilling all righteousness means.

Wisdom for living.

So let's even assume that Tithing isn't compulsory. Is it too much for a person to decide they must honour the God who created, provides for, and sustains them with JUST 10%?

If you say you love someone, should giving back 10% of the so much they've given to you be a problem?

The health, the life, the deliverance, the income, the peace, the hope, the salvation. A principle that you must give back 10% is too much?

You can't decide that even if you aren't compelled?

Please, you guys love God o! And always remember, God first. God ABOVE ALL ELSE.

You are talking trash like a breed of a fake, money gulping pastor.

You read my comment with zero sense and ended up making a fool of yourself.

Tell me where Jesus ever promoted tithe.
If you call me anti Christ for not paying tithe, it means you are just an ignorant Christian with zero knowledge.

Apostle Paul said people should give according to what they are comfortable with. If it is 10% or 20%, 50% or even 1%, it doesn't matter so long as you are comfortable doing it.

Boy, stop being a fool. Tithe is for Judaism and not Christianity. Tithe is to be given to Levites. Show me one tithe collecting Nigerian pastor that can be considered as a Levite.

Do you even know the meaning of a Levite? I doubt if you do. Dumb Christians everywhere. undecided

With this analysis s regards rent, It doesn't seem like you reside in Lagos at all. 1.3M is not a huge rent in Lagos Island & further, it is the median rent.

Where would you find a 2 Bedroom apartment close to office (Which I assume by the look of things would be Victoria Island / Ikoyi / Lekki) around the same 1.3M? Please check PropertyPro & other similar websites, let's see if you will can find anything like that.

The least 2 Bedroom apartment is around that environs is 3M to 5M.

In fact, if you find any house for 1.3M, please contact me, I am willing to pay that amount & sublet it to a new person.

Are V/I, Ikoyi, Lekki the only places close to V/I? Igbo Efon/Agungi/New Road/Ologolo are also close to V/I. You will easily do 40mins - 1hr if you leave home by 7am - 7:30am. Yaba is also close to V/I; had a colleague that did 30mins by 6:30am. Surulere, Iyanaworo is close, ditto Gbagada.

P.S.: if you are serious with house scouting, go to your preferred area yourself.

Okay, the locations you named (Igbo Efon/Agungi/New Road/Ologolo). If you search for 2-bedroom apartments online, you won't find any that are less than 2.5 million for 2-Bedroom that is liveable. If you do, that indicates that the home will have a lot of unresolved problems. Living in Surulere, Iyanaworo, and Gbagada equates to living in Ajah. Set a timer, leave work, and you'll be home at the same time. So there is no use in citing Iyanaworo & Co.

My point is that Lagos is absurdly expensive o, and the house-hunting experience you mentioned is comparable to fighting in World War II with house agents.

This dude's calculation is not far from the truth.

Oya send me a PM bro, let me rent the place and sublet it, it is not by making mouth here. A 2-bedroom flat place that is not Flooded in Igbo efon cannot be 600k. You wan thief the place?

Send me a PM and I will come to check out the available flat during the week, no be to dey make mouth. I stay close.

A lot of cheap places are close to slums that when rain falls, every where is Flooded! is that where OP should move to because he wants to save rent.

Those tenants might have been paying that amount because they rented the apartment years ago. I dare you to take me to a clean house in those areas that is not flooded & not a SLUM that is available as at Today 4th of June 2023 for that amount.

Ajah is not Igbo Efon & you are a very stupid person. The prices are very well different.

Now there are also so many SLUMS areas in Ajah such as Badore, Ado road etc others. Those places are even less than 700k BUT it is SLUM.

In that same Badore, there are also Estates that are clean and expensive. It is an Urban / Rural area put together.

I am not new to Lagos bro & you are a Fool if you cannot take me to that place at Igbo Efon that is 600k, you're a big fool.

You my friend tells lies

Enter street make you know how far.
Even a good looking mini flat now is hard to come by at 700k
Don't mind these people.

Just stating unrealistic things because they want to make a point by fire by force.

Put up your car for bolt services and use bolt to move around. You can't spend more than 25k weekly on that.
It's way more expensive moving around with bolt.
