Because the retailers take vehicles using petrol to go to the market and sell their wares, and also because the farmers are living in a society affected by the hike in petrol prices.

We all focus on transportation fare as the only factor that determines the price of food items , have we also consider increment in fertilizer price , chemicals/herbicides, manpower charges ,etc all these prices will also increase due to increment on PMS price ......don't forget that fertilizer and chemical/herbicides manufacturers will also increase their workers salary ,so it all goes to the price of their products .

This however does not discountenance the fact that in Nigeria, everyone is looking for an excuse to rip others off.
Cost of fertilizer has stagnated, insecurity is falling to pre-2015 levels in the North. But we are not seeing a drop in prices of staple food, only a rise.

unplanned removal of the Fuel subsidy is devastating (There was no plan to remove it so haphazardly. It was Tinubu's statement that "subsidy is gone" that spooked the oil marketers. When he said it was gone, he didn't mean immediately. It was just to show his resolve to remove it.

Oil marketers got scared and started increasing their prices. Some stations even closed. Meles Kyari capitalized on it and ended the subsidy)

Subsidy is the only way the nation gives back to the citizens without saying take free money and the only provision for the removal of the subsidy is still the subsidy itself. Many Nigerians won't rise above the hardship it would create for up to 5-10 years (The government was on to spend $10bn on petrol subsidy this year, more than what is spent on health care , education and the army altogether! How is that helpful?

The petrol subsidy puts pressure on the foreign reserves. Anything that puts pressure on the foreign reserves means it makes your currency depreciate in value. The fuel subsidy has been a major reason the Naira has been depreciating. A weaker Naira or much weaker hurts the poor the Nigerians yoiu care for the most)

The bigger enemy isn't subsidy , but lack of management and control of subsidy payments because of inflated invoices. This means the invoicing system, recording and payment structure is the problem in itself not the subsidy. The baby should not be thrown away with the bath water. Rather the bath water o ky needs to be made clean (King Solomon said "where there is no wood, the fires dies out".

The subsidy is the issue. It is wasteful. Even if N1 is expended on it, it should go. There are far better ways to help the poor. Its removal

The citizenry looses alot with the removal of subsidy payments because in this clime, salaries do not increase readily, meaning purchasing power becomes more and more difficult with this economic overhaul. ( Price increases or inflation due to the subsidy removal is benign unlike the type influenced by currency depreciation. Transport costs have risen since 2016, despite the fact that the subsidized price of fuel stayed the same.

When I moved to Akute, a bus ride from Berger to Akute in 2020 was 200. It increased to N300 about a year or 2 ago, this was despite there was no subsidy removal. I won't be surprised if it was N100 IN 2016. So prices did increase.

People only grumble when the increase is due to subsidy removal. In the next 5 years, even without the subsidy removal, the price would climb to at least N600. So, how does keeping the fuel subsidy benefit Nigerians in the short and long run?)

Maintaining the subsidy is to the benefit of the average citizen. It's managing the invoicing system that's the problem. We can have metered and regulated suslbsidy payment in place with FG placing caps on subsidy payment and then hedging the excesses against Government backed bonds, so short term economic traction is cushioned by long-term macrofinances of the court ey. (You're supporting government borrowing for what is recurrent expenditure? That's why the government expends all revenues for debt servicing today. There's zero money now to continue the subsidy. [b]

If invoicing and lack of accountability is the issue with fuel subsidy, then why don't we grant licensing that pays subsidy payments based on metered importation allowance?[b] (This weren't the problem. Cost of providing it was. As of today, the price of a litre is 47 cents. Multiply that 461 and you'll find out it was cheaper to buy petrol than crude oil at the old price)

When would Nigeria let thinking people lead ? When ! (The president has in a stroke ended a subsidy that would have drained the empty treasure of $10bn this year alone. Even if it is $4bn, it is a waste. This is recurrent expenditure. The money government borrows crowds out the private sector. Banks prefer to lend money to government.

It also discourages investment in refining. Refining licenses have been given out since the late 1990s but banks aren't prepared to lend money when government subsidies the end product. The only reason Dangote and Bua could go ahead was probably because they had the huge profits from their cement factories as collateral.)

The same 2012 problem is repeating itself. Sensationalism. Assuming that the subsidy only implies people stealing,.forgetting or not even considering it's benefits. (2012 isn't repeating itself. GEJ gave no warning about any subsidy removal. He carried no one along.

In this case, the removal of the subsidy is in the PIB. Buhari was supposed to removal it early this year but was was too timid and shifted it to July 1st. Also, Tinubu and other presidential contestants all said they'd remove the subsidy, that it was no longer affordable and draining the government purse)


The average minimum wage of a worker can't mean anything in a post subsidized fuel economy.(Without the removal, transport prices would still have gone up nevertheless)

Increase in food prices, Housing, transportation, lifestyle all at once without corresponding rise in salary payments is nothing short of a disaster. Be it Peter Obi, Tinubu, Atiku subsidy removal must be planned and strategized before actualized (I see no disaster)

In the end, the bigger enemy is the Hausa Fulani hegemony who setup cabals in all state instructions to run them down so private ones are setup to mop up the national treasury. Nigerian refineries and Dangote is typical (Had I focused on this, I wouldn't have replied this article. This is petty tribalism and bigotry. I am full blooded Yoruba)

The only misgiving I have concerning the subsidy removal is that since we know how our Nigerian societies work, has the federal government put any policy in place to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal on average Nigerians?? So far it seems as if there's nothing at all, the goal is to remove the subsidy with no provision to directly create a way to ease the impacts on the common man. We shall see as things unfold sha.

That's it, with the removal of subsidy, resources should be channelled to the necessary growth areas and we will be ok.
Policies and movements should be made to drive down the prices of oil, that's what we are looking forward to.
