Operation Araba was the major motive by the Murtala led mutineers composed mainly of northern officers.

The mutineers wanted to avenge on behalf of the north on the Ironsi Igbo led dictatorship that had supplanted itself following the Jan 15 coup.

Their main agenda was to leave Nigeria .

This was opposed by the northern Christian officers who were rightly weary of being overwhelmed in a future Arewa Islamic state.

Gowon prevailed on Murtala and told him there was no money in the north to support an independent northern Nigerian state. The icing that made Murtala rescind his seccesionist bid was when Gowon told Murtala and his co mutineers that it will be better if the north remains in the new centrist Nigeria fashioned by the Igbo coupists as there was now a bright future with the discovery of oil in the Niger Delta.

Now ,imagine if Murtala and his co northern officers had gone ahead with Operation Araba .

For one, there was a political vacuum in both the current SW and SS owing to the execution of their leaders by the Igbo coupists in 1966. Awolowo was serving a prison sentence for treason and the Yoruba nation was in total dissaray following both the lack of leadership and almost zero presence in the new military setup.

The Yorubas were mute through these turbulent times because there was no way they could challenge either the Igbo dictatorship or the Northern one that succeeded it.

With a scenario that Murtala left with the north, I can bet Ojukwu would have rolled over both the Midwest and western region and southern Nigeria would have been a totally different place with Igbos ruling over the SW and SS people.

The Igbos planned for that coup decades prior as they were silently enlisting in the Military and Zik was packing the officer cadre with his Zikist students .

The north found out very late in 1959 about this lopsided domination of the military by the Igbo and the Sarduna began recruiting young secondary school students in the north to enlist into the military college.

The likes of IBB and Abacha were inspired by Sarduna visiting their schools with a young sharp looking Gowon in his smart officer suit.

While the north was playing catch up with the Igbo , the SW and SS people were oblivious on the future shift in our political landscape from that of an intelligenstia led democratic leadership to brute military rule .

This is one reason why I believe that the unfortunate Jan 15 coup was no accident but the outcome of a long standing ambition by the Igbo Marxist to infiltrate the military and seize power from there on.

In summary, if not for Gowon ,the Igbo would have entrenched themselves as rulers above their betters in both the SS and SW.

Thank God, Gowon intervened.

Victimhood again.

How did Ojukwu plan an offensive in the Midwest and the SW if his Biafra was facing genocide ?

You invaded Midwest first before Nigerian troops invaded your rogue Biafra .

You drove Ejoor out of the Midwest and staged a failed attack to take the SW.

This is despite Ejoor refusing Nigerian troops passage through the Midwest to attack your rogue Biafra .

Same Ejoor and Midwest people who gave your refugee grand parents unhindered free passage through their region as they fled from the SW.

But instead, you guys got Bendel Igbos to kill him and when he got word and fled , your Ojukwu then declared Midwest an independent nation.

This was the turning point for the Midwest people against you who were once the only ones advocating for peace on your behalf .

You drew first blood from Jan 15 .

OP, Is it the Igbos or Ojukwu that sent them to carry out the Araba Operation? undecided

So why do you now Blame the Igbos? sad

Anyways, I don't think the Igbos could have Dominated the other Southerners, during that 1960's era.🤔

1. They Lack the Numbers.
2. Aggressive southern Tribes like Ijaws, Binis, Tivs, etc would NOT allow them.🤨

So just rest with ur Igbophobia this Nite.😏

You are either a bastard or an 0koro impostor .

Go and read how Bendel Igbos attempted to kill Ejoor before you spew nonsense.

Go and ask why Ejoor fled from the Midwest after getting hint that his own officers who were mainly Bendel Igbo were planning to kill him.

Go and ask how Ojukwu declared Midwest a separate nation and from there moved his cannibal orcs into Midwest and started killing , raping and cannibalising young men in the Midwest.

Go and read how in Warri , young men stormed a Biafran cantonment to free their brothers that were rounded up by Igbo troops .

You know nothing.

I will refer you to Professor Akpan's book exposing the artrocities committed by Igbo troops on the Niger Delta during the occupation .

As I said, you are either a bastard or an 0su impostor to spew such trash

Or can you explain what led to Ejoor fleeing his post as MILAD of the Western region ?

Can you tell us why and how Biafran soldiers invaded and occupied the Midwest ?

Can you deny that it is from this same Midwest that Biafran troops launched their assault on the SW?

Even after being beating back at Ore, Igbo troops made sure to pillage every settlement in their retreat to which ethnic minorities in the Midwest suffered the brunt before Biafran troops got to Onitsha and blew the Niger Bridge .

You can believe your lies, I won't answer you after this.

Nigeria declared war on Biafra and kept invading and capturing biafrian cities and villages. They captured these villages and were committing genocides. These Nigerians were made up of lots of people from the Midwest and South West. So Igbo's are not required to retaliate?

Who is Ejoor? Is he an enemy soldier or not? Igbo's were on the defensive and it's necessary to do whatever it takes to survive - including attacking your attackers.

They invaded South West and Midwest and so what? When our people were busy commiting war crimes against the Biafrans. Hatred has so beclouded your thinking that all your views are skewed, biased and prejudiced. I personally have issues with Igbo's but I will always stand for the truth. What the Igbo's did was what they thought best . they were fighting for survival. Y'all killed millions of them

Thank God, Gowon intervened.

OGUNDIPE IN DISTRESS

Following the murders of 200-300 Igbo soldiers (names, ranks, units and numbers are listed in Hilary Njoku’s: "A Tragedy Without Heroes" and the Eastern Ministry of Information’s "January 15th: before and after"wink, Brigadier Babafemi Ogundipe (a mild mannered Yoruba officer with no political ambition) was now the most senior surviving officer. When the British handed over command of the Nigerian army to indigenous soldiers in 1965, the outgoing General Officer Commanding, Major-General Welby-Everard had recommended Ogundipe as his replacement without success. However, as mayhem ensued following the mutinies across the country, Ogundipe could not assert his authority over the northern troops.

Via telephone, Ogundipe informed the military governor of the Eastern region; Lt-Col Ojukwu, that northern troops had stated their conditions for a “ceasefire”: the killings of Igbos would continue until the northern region seceded from the federation, and northerners and southerners were repatriated to their respective regions of origin. Ojukwu replied "if that is what they want, let them go" and replaced the receiver (see N U Akpan - "The Struggle For Secession"wink.

The Ikeja cantonment became the undeclared Headquarters of the mutineers. Ogundipe dispatched a platoon from the Federal Guard to Ikeja cantonment. However the northern troops refused to accept their orders and turned them away. Ogundipe’s own orders received a similar response. The “limit" came for the Brigadier when a northern Sergeant quipped to him: "I do not take orders from you until my (northern) captain comes". To a seasoned professional soldier like Ogundipe (accustomed to unquestioning obedience of his orders during a military career spanning over 20 years), such disobedience was beyond comprehension. A northern private similarly refused to obey orders from the Military Governor of Lagos State; Major Mobolaji Johnson.

The exasperated Ogundipe sent the Chief of Staff (Army), Lt-Col Yakubu Gowon to bargain with the mutineers. Gowon like other senior northern officers Lt-Col Hassan Katsina, and Lt-Col Mohammed Shuwa was not personally involved in the mutiny. However, when the smoke temporarily cleared, they gave their assent to the fait accompli and were brought in to participate in the Ikeja negotiations. When Gowon arrived, it appears that he was not a free agent and was held in circumstances amounting to arrest (see Ruth First: “The Barrel Of A Gun”). The northern officers were joined by a number of federal secretaries, two Judges, prominent northern civil servants and by British and American diplomats who asked the northern soldiers to drop their plan to secede from the federation. As negotiations continued in Ikeja, the explosive Lt-Col Murtala Muhammed was the most vociferous and uncompromising advocate of northern secession. The civilian participants managed to persuade the northern soldiers to drop their secessionist plan, and their most senior member; Lt-Col Gowon was appointed Head of State.

Convinced that he was to be the next target of the northern soldiers, Brigadier Ogundipe departed with his pistol, to emerge in London as Nigeria's High Commissioner in the United Kingdom.

Please stop fabricating history to massage your ego and to deceive your Yoruba tribesmen into seeing Igbos as the devil. If you don't know the true story, read books on the topic written by neutral foreign journalists please. Some of them are quoted in the write up I copied and pasted here from popular books written by foreigners

Ogundipe was supposed to head the military as recommended by the outgoing British Maj General but your useless Zik chose the incompetent Ironsi who was a glorified NCO elevated to an officer during the Nigerianation of the army .

Zik chose Ironsi over Ogundipe and that of a Sandhurst trained northern officer whom the outgoing British chose ahead of Ironsi who was third on the list .

For some reason the senior northern officer whom Zik ignored for Ironsi (I can't remember his name) was on the list of those to be executed by the Igbo coupists to which they did kill in cold blood so as to pave way for Ironsi's ascent to power.

Ogundipe was a professional soldier with no political ambitions and since the Igbo coup had resulted into a north Vs East war and with hardly any Yoruba officers and troops in the military, how was he to take control ?

Ask yourself why Ironsi will see his natural superior officer, Ogundipe and still went ahead to declare himself HoS?

Later , your Ojukwu will be claiming superiority over Gowon as reasons why he did not respect his authority as HoS after Ironsi was despatched with.

You see, everything you accuse others of, you are a hundred times guilty of and you even set the prescedence.

Since then , you have been complaining of all the rubbish you did and caused because you lost out in your own game.

The de facto leader and co-coordinator of the north's revenge coup was the Inspector of Signals; Lt-Col Murtala Muhammed. Having finalised arrangements for their coup, northern officers twice postponed it because of last minute changes of heart and logistical problems. An opportunity arose when the Head of State, Maj-Gen Ironsi decided to undertake a nationwide tour. On the first leg of this tour, gunshots were heard while Ironsi was at Kaduna airport. Nothing further than this occurred on the northern lap of Ironsi's tour, thanks largely to the personal intervention of the Emir of Kano. Northern traditional rulers had cautioned against spilling Ironsi's blood on northern soil. Thus northern soldiers decided to deal with Ironsi when he arrived in Ibadan (where a large contingent of northern soldiers was based, and which had an indifferent local population) for the western leg of his nation-wide tour.

After addressing an assembly of western traditional rulers on July 28th, Ironsi decided to spend the night in the Ibadan State House with the members of his entourage.

In an effort to prove that he was not heading an "Igbo regime", Ironsi had with great courage entrusted his personal security to northern soldiers (including Major Yakubu Danjuma, Lieutenants William Walbe, Titus Numan and Sani Bello). One of his ADCs was the younger brother of Lt-Col James Pam (who had been murdered during the January coup). By surrounding himself with northern soldiers, Ironsi sealed his own fate.

Stop lying against Igbos if not you will pay a deadly price from nature. Say the truth, stop twisting history.

Ironsi was killed because he wanted one Nigeria and entrusted his security in the hands of Northerners without listening to Igbo officers like Col. Ojukwu that forewarned him about that.

Ironsi wasn't part of the January 1966 coup (go and read the famous book written by a Yoruba Officer among the main coup plotters of that coup, the title of the book is "Why We Struck" by a Yoruba military officer that participated in the coup). Ironsi only made mistake by not executing those coupists who were mostly Igbo officers and by entrusting his security to Northern military officers. These were his two most dangerous mistakes. Stop lying against the dead, it comes with deadly consequences.

Ironsi was the highest ranking military officer when British handed over to indigenous politicians. Welby only recommended Ogundipe based on his personal relationship with him because he worked under him while Ironsi held higher rank and worked mostly abroad on foreign missions, in Military then you follow rank not by mere recommendation.

Ironsi was the first Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff based on him being the highest in rank, so I don't know the Northern officers you were talking about.

Mai Malari or Col Pam or which of them held a higher rank than Ironsi?

Ojukwu told Ogundipe to grant Northern Mutineers headed by Muritala Mohammed their request to secede Northern region from Nigeria, it was the British Diplomats and some topranking Northern Civil Servants at the negotiation meeting at Ikeja that persuaded Muritala Mohammed and co Northern Mutineers to drop their push for secession. No Igbo man dead or alive refused or opposed them. The leader of Eastern Nigeria then was Col. Ojukwu and he granted them their request to secede for peace to reign since they said that was the only thing they wanted.

The outgoing British Maj General nominated three senior officers to replace him and wrote a brief on each of them.

Top of his list was the northern officer (the most junior of all of them )to which Welby wrote glowingly of and cited him as the only professionally trained officer . For the love of God, I can't remember his name but same officer became a staff officer in the first Republic and was murdered by the Igbo coupist.

Ogundipe became second on the list.

Ironsi was only added because he was the most senior but his humble beginnings as an NCO and later an apprenticed officer did not get any glorifying notes from the outgoing British Maj General.

It was then up to Zik as the President and commander n chief to select whom to choose and he chose Ironsi over what can be described as based on ethnic sentiments.

The northern officer got the highest recommendation but was ignored by Zik for Ironsi.

That alone exposes the Igbo agenda early on prior to the Jan 15 coup.

Ogundipe never assumed power after Ironsi was killed.

So why will Ojukwu demand he grant the north right to secede when the whole point of the mutineers was to leave Nigeria ?

Dense.

If you must accuse any other Igbo politician of the 1960s of having an Igbo agenda, Zik should never make such list because Zik never aligned with Igbo people's interest (reason majority of Igbos don't like him or speak high of him), Zik aligned more with the North and stood mostly for National unity than Igbo supremacy you claim.

Zik is a highly principled man who never liked White Colonialists dictating things for him, and people that worked with Zik said he loved to follow rules.

Ironsi was the highest ranking Nigerian indigenous soldier when Britain handed over to Nigerian indigenous politicians and the most honorable thing to do was to appoint him as the Army Chief based on seniority.

How can Zik have intention of Igbo dominance and he relinquished his highest position as the CinC to Tafawa Belewa to enable him focus on uniting African nations which made them to nickname him "Zik of Africa".

Igbos were like the most informed Nigerians pre-independence, followed by Yorubas and Igbos dominated virtually all sectors then based on merit when the whiteman was in charge, so when Nigeria got independence, it was as if Igbos headed most of the regional army cantonments and other political offices causing other tribes to envy and suspect Igbos of trying to dominate everybody.

Did Nzeogwu and co made mistake carrying out that first coup? Definitely YES. But it was never an Igbo coup because Igbos had no reason to carry out coup when Igbos virtually dominated all sectors, headed most of the army cantonments, held the position of Senate President, President, Inspector General of Police was also from old Eastern Nigeria though not Igbo but was still under the control of Igbo leaders then.

It was a very costly mistake, especially with the execution of the coup by the Igbo officer that headed the Old Eastern Region's part of the coup who foolishly spared Michael Okpara, Nwafor Orizu the then Senate President and even Ikoku too. If they had killed any of them, Northerners and Yorubas wouldn't have seen it as Igbo coup because the coupists were made up of Igbos, Yorubas, Middlebelt, Hauda, today Niger Delta officers too, though Igbo officers headed the coups in the 4 regions of Nigeria while the others acted as support or foot soldiers.

The Northern soldiers that followed Nzeogwu to carry out the coup were also detained at Benin Prison, and were released by Northern Soldiers that invaded the Prison during the counter coup while they killed Igbo officers jailed at that same Benin coup that participated in the January coup.

The thing is, Northerners and Yorubas were already envious of Igbos dominance in virtually all sectors after independence, so there was a bottled up anger/suspicion against Igbos who held most key positions shortly after independence, so when the January coup happened, Northerners and Yorubas then concluded that they were right in suspecting Igbos all along and tagged it Igbo coup
