Personally, I never paid much attention to the office, neither was the office an object of much attention to the press untill Jonathan's administration.

Appointments is just nothing really, how close and accessible u are to the president is the main issue

That depends on how the President wants it.

When you throw the history between the President and the new NSA in the mix, the NSA will have the ear of the President and therefore will be more influential than any service chief.

Any service chief that subverts the office of the NSA by failing to cooperate will have his day with the President, and that could mean a sack.

Correct. Emphasis on "Adviser" in National Security Adiser. The NSA can advise a President, who trusts his judgement implicitly, to fire any service Chief at any time. It is as simple as that because the security of a nation is very important.

Not at all. It is some Nigerian Presidents who have made the office seem so because they use executive power , and the over-powerful office of the Nigerian President, dictatorially.

In nations with institutional integrity, with strong checks and balances, an NSA must have the ears and trust of the President.

Nothing to add.

NSA is a position headed by a skilled person who understands security in every angles. More like a consultant. The president listen to him and becus the president can't listen (doesn't know much about security or have time to attend to all service chief), hence the office of the NSA gives feedback to the president in a layman language (just an illustration)

So, all service chief are king in their domain but the NSA is like their class teacher whom dey must submit their report to for the presidents understanding of what's is what
