This is stupid , half of Nigerian population do not even have smart phones so are you going to force them to own social media ? All Nigerians must reject this , if the banks will collapse let them collapse, the APC is taking their crimes against Nigeria too far
Abi. I asked the same question too! There are some people in this country with no social media footprints at all as they are not with such kind of phones that facilitate that!

Who told you that, they are on social media than the Southerners

This is anti North, meaning that the 80% of northerners that are not on social media will never operate their bank accounts again?

We have more than enough personal data to work with in Nigeria, duplication of data is what we love doing, all minus no plus. Birth certificate, NIN, Drivers Licence, International Passport, BVN, Phone Registration, Social media registration. All can be done with one data base but we behave as if we don't know all these.
They want to embezzle more money as usual. angry

DeLaRue:
It is not compulsory.

If you don't have a social media account, you simply leave that part of the account opening form blank.

Just as not having an email address doesn't stop anyone from opening and maintaining an account.

I think home address is the only contact information that is compulsory. I am not even sure phone no is compulsory.
Are you sure of this sir?

You can’t make such mandatory in any country. NIN is enough information.

This is wrong and uncalled for. It can be used against people for social expressions and even by government against their free speech.

Social media handles has nothing to do with company information or sources of income unless where it is a business handle.
Which is why it should be contested in court as it is basically an intrusion of people's privacy.

How ? You need a SM to open an account but yiu don't need a bank account to open many SM accounts. Give the bank a dead sm account while you use the main one

I don't even understand what the article said. Please can you explain to my understanding. Is it mandatory or not?
You don't need to understand It. it's a stupid policy which would not be implemented in any way. It's not mandatory and even if it's mandatory (in an alternate universe) there's nothing they can do with it. Banks can't use it to stop fraud or anything else, it's simply a stupid policy grin. Even bank and bankers don't know the meaning of this CBN's policy.

" By adapting regulations to include digital footprints, the CBN aims to ensure that financial institutions have a more holistic understanding of their customers, promoting enhanced due diligence and risk mitigation.
This development serves as a reminder to individuals and businesses to be mindful of their online presence and activities.
"

From the signing of the Data Protection Act which makes it compulsory for every organisation in Nigeria to collate, store and provide data of every of your customers to the govt agency regulating data now to this, it is only someone who is naive who will think this era will not come after the burning of Lagos in 2020 by those unpatriotic elements hiding under Endsars.

No hiding place again even on Nairaland. All those commiting fraud, criminal defamations, forex change news manipulators and cyberbullying online will now be of risk interest to the banks.

This is a great effort in bringing decency to our society at large, not just to the financial sector, even romance scams and scammers will now be monitored.
God bless Nigeria for ever!
Sense is far from you, what stops them from having multiple sm accounts.
It doesn't solve any problem, it only adds more field on the forms to fill.

I don't think this will work. Because I personally believes that 50% of bank users are not on SM especially people from the N part of Nigeria.
So how do u force people with no SM handle to tender one for KYC documentation?

This is not realistic in my opinion.
Re: Social Media Handle Mandatory KYC Requirement For Bank Customers- CBN by waice6571: 12:08pm On Jun 24, 2023
This cannot work effectively. The aims and objectives will be defeated easily.

For instance, I may register my Nairaland account with my bank and come back here to deactivate that moniker and activate another account and continue with my life. Same with Facebook account, Instagram and other social media platforms.

No need to fight over this infractions.... It comes with a permanent solution.... cool grin

You are not calling out govt when you criminally defame and cyberbully others. You are actually breaking the law and it's the job of govt to enforce the laws. If you do it and get away today, tomorrow you will be the victim of another cyberbully and criminal defamer.

Critics are intelligent people courted even by govt because they use facts to influence public opinion. You can't move any needle by committing crimes online.
f u and your government of tyranny

Many men don’t understand why they are doing this, it is a silent step towards taxing content creators. We see how much you’re making with your contents, we know how much to tax you and we know when you default.

I don't have issues with this but we are talking about massive social data on who's peoples hand and how's it's going to be used, who and who will have access to it and will it be at the interest if national security or some individuals personal interest.
