Well, the world was a different place in 1945

1.The US at the time was the only nation with nuclear weapons. (Nazi Germany had a nuclear weapons program, but it was a disaster...starting with the fact that the lead scientist was far more interested in chasing skirt than calculaitons, and anyway all his calculations were wrong. Japan too had a program, but it was still on the drawing board).

2.When you are the only nation with nuclear weapons, you can pretty much dictate to anyone.

3.Seven years later, during the Korean war, when a US general suggested that the US should use nukes against its enemy...he was shut down and sacked by the US president.

Reason: The allies of the DPRK...the USSR, had nuclear weapns , having tested them some 3 years earlier.

MAD was in effect.

If Japan had nukes in 1945, US won't have used nuclear weapons on them. MAD would have been in full force.
