Many people don't understand the true teaching of Islam in a situation like this. Prophet never asked anyone to kill anybody for insulting him for He was very peaceful. Most the people that participated in this mob action misunderstood Islam in that regard.
There was what is called 'Jihad' ie fight for the cause of Islam. Many misconstrued this concept. Many thought it involve killing people in the name of Islam.
