Tribalism: Please Save My Relationship. by Jayline(op): 4:51pm On Jun 30, 2023
Forgive my writing, I am not a good writer.

I couldn't post on romance section, it says I should retry in few weeks.

I met this Prince(not his real name) during my nysc days in 2021, he is career driven who gainfully employed in a company here in PH as a data analyst, I liked him and tried to get closed to him. I was able to get a job after my NYSC thanks to the python he taught me.

Though he was single. After my service he asked me out and I accepted cos I already liked him and felt he can help build my career, that is the romantic part of the story.

My parents doesn't like him due to tribal differences. They want me to marry someone from my tribe but I already love my boyfriend.
Recently, he started giving attitude and isn't much interested in the relationship after failing to convince my parents, though I told him that my parents sentiments doesn't matter cos I know I will still want to end up with him even if they don't bless my marriage.

But my explanation seems not to have the substance to convince him, it seems I can't stop him from leaving and that is my biggest fear.
Please I need advice cos at this moment, I am depressed

Start by telling us your tribe
Re: Tribalism: Please Save My Relationship. by taylor89(m): 4:54pm On Jun 30, 2023
I really don’t blame your parents

Our political preferences and mindsets play a very important role in our lives

Our political choices can make or destroy us and even people around us

Imagine my daughter bringing an adamant Tinubu supporter as a prospective Inlaw

Maybe your parents saw his tribe & observed his political views hence the rejection

From your write up I see you’re from Rivers State and your boyfriend is Yoruba

More likely your parents presidential election votes were rigged by Mamood Yakubu against their wish hence the hatred

Since it’s Rivers state the only person your parents can listen to now is Peter Obi

Go beg Obi to beg your parents

In my opinion I think you are talking to the wrong people.

People you should be talking to are people that can help talk to your parents and convince them to accept your decision.

You have your Pastor/Imams, you have your uncle's that your parents can listen to, you have your parents good friends to talk to.

And most importantly, if your mom is still available, here is the most easiest person to talk to.

Nairalanders cannot really talk to your parents directly.

But on a second thought why are your parents like that in this modern age. Anyway even the tribalism is even worst now in Nigeria than it was in those days.

I think she is from akwaibom state ,while the guy is from Igbo ...

Akwaibom parent don't like their children getting married to Igbo people .

They prefer to marry we Yoruba Christians...

We the southwest and Southsouth are one..

Anyway God bless the good people of Southsouth and Southwest
Re: Tribalism: Please Save My Relationship. by blabulu2000: 5:24pm On Jun 30, 2023
It is not even advisable for now to marry someone outside your tribe now...because politics and politicians has created enmity between Yoruba people and different tribe most specially Yiibo people ....all if a sudden my Yiibo friend don dey show my attitude because of all this hatred...

I will never advise anyone to marry out his or her tribe this time....because it is dangerous.....

Bros, Nigeria is far from united. Unity is a symbol of love. No marriage can work in a situation where love is nonexistent.

There's no love in Nigeria. That's why you see the political class rip the country apart with reckless abandon and their tribal people support them.

So, I seriously encourage young people to marry from their tribes or from tribes their people historically marry from.

We can choose to pretend all we want, but deep down we know that our political decisions affect everyday lives, affiliations and marriages.

As for the OP, don't force it. A lady shouldn't marry into a family where she's not accepted because you will end up wallowing in regrets. In Africa, the two families marry, not just the couples. If your parents don't want the guy, let him go.

A word, for the wise, is enough....

My dear I am sorry about the situation you are facing.

You should have been the one trying your best to convince your parents tho in my opinion.

Try and make your parents see reasons why the should support your choice of man against these barriers you two are facing as first step.

I wish you and your man luck.

Obviously he still loves you and that's why he still gives you attention.

How do you expect reasonable advice in nairaland here where Tribalistic has become their Bread and Butter . Talk to people around your parents to convince them and try to know the point why they don't want it for you bcs they can see more than you do then your eye will open after Marriage if you follow love without looking inword properly for the reality of things before before engagement.

marry from your tribe for peace
Re: Tribalism: Please Save My Relationship. by AlexBells(m): 7:55pm On Jun 30, 2023
Some things are not worth fighting for, marriage is a very painful and ussually tragic experience so forget about how you feel, you would have lots of regrets tomorrow as any slightest thing you would be reminded that you were told.

Love blinds us, it might not just be the man's tribe but there could be something offsetting about him that your parent have seen, please try as much as possible to convince your parent however try to see things from their perspective, at the end of the day you are the one leaving your family's house and marriage isn't some python dance, joking here just as you said he thought you python.

Talk with him, tell him how much you love him, tell him for the two of you to get in some prayer that would give you the strength to move or make your parent to see otherwise. Going into marriage without parents blessing could be dicey, in the long run your husband of today may be your worst enemy and no one to have your back, you will be filled with pains and regret
