It is human nature to always subdue and oppress when they are the majority. I don't think you can compare Awolowo with Tinubu. Tinubu doesn't come close, not even by half. Tinubu only exploits Tribal affiliation for his political goals. Awolowo exploit tribal affiliations for the advancement of his people. He cares less about others. But then he's a leader of a region with non-Yorubas.

He could have avoided lots of setbacks by being neutral, but no, he'd loose it all than not advancing the goal of his people. Tinubu won't make such moves. Tinubu exploits both Tribal and religious sentiments for his political goals. So Awolowo is more a tribal leader.

@bolded, even till today, that sentiments still hold for the minorities. Should Nigeria divide today you'd be shocked by how many nation will come out of this contraption. Nobody wants to experience what they faced during the regional system of government. The minorities were munched from all corners.
You are right about Awolowo. And I’m sure that’s why a lot of stakeholders of Nigeria never wanted him to be president.

He remained a Nationalist till Death,Bro. sad

In 1979, His Party NPP won Election in Faraway Plateau state. (Solomon Lar). 🤨🙂

He was called Zik of Africa and was NOT a Ethnic Warlord Politician like Buhari, Awolowo and Tinubu.
He was Pan-Nigerian like the current day Peter Obi. 😊😎
Some fact about Azikiwe. A tribal bigot.

Ibrahimcoomasie:
Early politicians of the 30s, 40s, Chiefs among them are mostly talented in writing and journalism and some owned media outfits, with which they laud and inflate their egos while simultaneously deflating d profile of those they disagree with in the political firmament.

Herbert Macaulay (A Yoruba man), the Father of Nigerian Nationalism, also a journalist was fond of calling dissenting voices 'imperialism agents' but ZIK took it to an elevated proportion, re-christened it to 'imperial stooges', 'Uncle Toms' and 'aunty Jememas', even those whose patriotism and Nationalism had never been in doubt were so named; minor disagreements and you are blacklisted. ZIK had a Newspaper outlet, 'the Pilot', a tool he creatively used to maximum advantage. The editors would daily eulogize him for d basics, and sometimes for the hitherto unknown and unheard of good things for Nigeria, nay, 'Mother Africa', Some of them acclaimed him as d 'Ghandi of Africa' and others declared that ZIK deeds had 'eleczik-ified' them.

ZIK was obviously very gifted, intelligent and clever which manifested in his works; however, he was regarded by many of his peers as the 1st consummate propagandist that Nigeria ever produced. In inflating his own ego or deflating that of his rivals, publications on the Pilot observed neither modesty nor reck. In this connection, he was in direct line of succession to Herbet Macaulay, but like all sons who are worthy of their parentage, in this respect, ZIK outdid Herbert Macaulay, for he took propaganda several notches higher with a slant of deep seated tribalism.

For example, when the ban on Palm Kernel was imposed, the Pilot supported it and reported thus: "the measure by the Government is fair. Instead of reducing the whole country to poverty, only the Western provinces will be affected and they can switch over to other avenues, to make body and soul live." He held similar stance as to the agitation against the 'Cocoa Pool'.

ZIK brazenly supported a policy which clearly threatened the livelihood of the Yorubas. Were the East on the receiving end here, ZIK would have dipped pen in gall, and crafted a creatively worded opinion on the Pilot, denouncing the Cocoa Pool as an 'imperialist device or stratagem whose aim, object and purpose was to oppress, repress, depress and distress Nigerian Cocoa producers and dealers economically' and he would have replicated same for d ban on palm kernels in d West. He would have labeled it 'a gross betrayal of trust, an indelible stain, blemish and stigma on British imperialism; a vain attempt, a complete misfire and a palpable boner in the realm of divide et impera.' Pardon my poor attempt at replicating ZIK's creative writing genius, he many a time used such strong words.

ZIK took this tribalist venom to higher Plateau when he graced the front page of the Pilot, and entitled it 'Football Iliad, 1940 Edition' what many described as a shocker, a big step forward in an insidious campaign colored in Bigotry. A football match between 2 schools, Christ the King's college, Onitsha was hosted by St. Gregory's college in Lagos, in a match tagged 'Win the War'.

The CKC team from Onitsha defeated St Gregory's team by 5 goals to 4. Spectators had a good watch, even the host considered the match very entertaining, a bonding moment for teams made up of teenagers of different cultures, that afterall is the spirit of sport.

But how did ZIK report it? ZIK saw in the sporting exploits and triumph of the team from Onitsha the inherent superiority of the Ibos over the Yorubas and he went to very great pains to establish this in d careful choice of words and emphasis..

"And then to think of the great combination of d Spartan heroes who crossed her loudly Niger, journeyed through the good earth of Benin, hurried across the domains of the Oshemawe of Ondo, of the Atanla of Owo, of the Owa of Ilesha, of the Ooni of Ife, of the Alake of Abeokuta in their invasion of these islands!

Who, but heroes of mighty brawn and exceptionally developed brain would have dared to make this invasion and to succeed in carrying to their River Niger home, the Golden fleece of Inter-Collegiate Soccer Championship of d Eastern and Western Provinces?"

https://twitter.com/LegendaryJoe/status/1638066082652012545?t=kX5tAe6CJgjxafLLfDYiPQ&s=19
Part 2
CONT'D

...Such was the mocking tone with which ZIK described an innocent football match with a slant of superiority complex.

But the same CKC team met the Olubadan XI, an undiluted Yoruba team in another 'Win the War' match on 24 August 1940 and were roundly defeated 3-2.

It may just be a matter of coincidence that ZIK wasn't in the mood to write at the time or perhaps he suffered what we call 'Writer's Block', because for more than 2 weeks, this headline event never got reported on the Pilot. And when the paper finally wrote on it, it was only a small item on the back page, like a mistress smuggled out of the window at the arrival of the madam of the house..and was laced with excuses,

"the CKC team was already tired; some of the players were in fact limping before the match",

and other calculated efforts to avoid giving the yoruba boys their well deserved accolade, and extreme energy was exerted in ensuring the brilliance and talent of those little yoruba boys was never acknowledged.

This was but tip of the Iceberg, ZIK would go full scale Bigotry afterwards.

Shall I Begin?

The Ibos were given inordinate publicity on the pages of the paper, which I regard as appropriate and in order, to promote one's root..but at a time when other Nationalists made concerted efforts in describing citizens of Nigeria as Nigerians or Africans and celebrated their laurels and feats as credits to Nigeria and Africa as a whole, ZIK would jettison the whole for the particular and elevate Ibo over and above every other tribe and largely over Nigeria as an entity, and in a manner that smirked Ego inspired Hate.

Typical Front Page news title in the Pilot this time were;

1. 'Ibo Young man Sail to U.K.' Sept 23, 1938. Referring to Mr. Jaja Wachukwu, who later became Speaker of Houe of Rep.

2. '14th West African Student, 10th Nigerian, 8th Ibo in U.S.A.' Jan 28, 1939. The 8th Ibo was Mr. Nwafor Orizu, later became Senator.

3. 'Ibo Medical Student Passes Exam in 1st Class Honours.' June 26, 1940. That was Dr. S.O. Eguwatu.

And some weird editorials like:

'The Ibo Are Coming' Dec 31, 1938, Wondered what ZIK meant, but the title is indicative enough of some theory of domination.

These are but very few examples of deliberate actions of ZIK in portraying the perceived supremacy of the Ibos over others, for the Pilot never beamed the light on the achievements of Nigerians of other ethnic stock...

For example, when the Ph.D. degree of London University, indeed any university for that matter, was conferred on the first Nigerian ever, such historic success was only given a small space in the paper and the title read: 'Nigerian Economist passes Ph.D. London', because that scholar was Dr. Fadipe, a Yoruba.

Dear @magdalenegab_1,

Thank you for your feedback. This is one of the propaganda that Colonel Emeka Ojukwu fed his people using Radio Biafra and the likes of Okokon Ndem and Uche Chukwumerije.

Before war broke out, Chief Awolowo visited Colonel Ojukwu to prevent war. Ojukwu recorded the meeting. If Awolowo betrayed him and Biafra, don't you think Radio Biafra would have played the tape?

Chief Awolowo went to that meeting with witnesses because he knew of Colonel Ojukwu's capacity for propaganda. One of the witnesses was Professor Sam Aluko, who gave an account of that March 1967 meeting while Ojukwu was still alive. Please Google his account, which corroborates Chief Awolowo's account.

Chief Awolowo tried to persuade Colonel Ojukwu not to secede. However, Okukwu claimed that Chief Awolowo promised to secede from Nigeria with the Western Region if the Eastern region seceded. How could that be possible when even before he left for the visit, he had told a world press conference of the reason for his trip?

Now, at that time, most Nigerian soldiers were in the Western Region, specifically at Ibadan, Abeokuta, and Lagos. Most of those soldiers were of Northern origin. How could Chief Awolowo have agreed to secede when his reign overflowed with Northern troops? Would that not have meant that they would be massacred?

Colonel Ojukwu was not the easiest person to get along with. Even his own father, Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, had a hard time getting along with him, and they were not on speaking terms for some time. He executed his friend, Colonel Victor Banjo, a Yoruba man who chose to fight for Biafra, on charges of treason. Much of the perpetrators of the January 15, 1966 coup, for which he was a beneficiary, died in mysterious circumstances in Biafra. Ifeajuna was executed on charges of plotting a coup. Nzeogwu was found shot at Nsukka. Nobody knows the true circumstances of his death till today.

Even Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Igbo leader before Ojukwu arrived on the scene, had to escape from Biafra and turned up in Lagos in 1969, sitting beside General Gowon, declaring support for the Federal Military Government and condemning Colonel Ojukwu.

The question is, why are these people accusing
Chief Awolowo of betraying Biafra silent on Chief Azikiwe? Azikiwe was a Biafran. Chief Awolowo was not a Biafran. Yet, Azikiwe escaped from Biafra in fear for his life and supported Nigeria against Biafra. But it is Chief Awolowo they want to blame. You can see that these sets of people never want to accept responsibility and always prefer to blame the innocent for their own actions.

Now, please read the comments, and watch as they avoid these facts like the #COVID19 virus and proceed to insult me.

#TableShaker

We owe it as a duty to the next generation that the right history is preserved and not allowed to be rewritten, retold or diluted by liars.

When I made a post earlier today where I noted that since the 1952 elections, the region that is now known as Southeast and Southsouth have always voted in same direction, I, expectedly, got some negative reactions from proponents of falsehood who tried to remind me that some part of the region now known as Southsouth were geographically and politically part of the Western Region before they became a distinct Midwestern Region.

The question they have refused to answer however is why did the people Benin and Delta fight teeth and nail to be separated from the Western Region? And the answer was because the Yorubas who formed the larger ethnic group in the old Western Region wanted to “Yorubanize” everything to the extent of trying to make Yoruba the lingua Franca and having a Yoruba who lived in Sapele representing Benin Province in Western Assembly at some point until Benin people agitated against it.

These attitudes forced majority of the political leaders of the then Midwest Province to go into alliance with Azikiwe led NCNC instead of Awolowo’s Action Group (AG). So, even though they were administratively under Western Region, the Midwestern people aligned with Azikiwe’s NCNC politically. The implication was that they voted in same pattern with the Eastern Region where NCNC dominated.

And that was how in 1952, out of 24 elected representatives of Midwestern Province in the Western Regional Assembly, 21 of them were of NCNC and only 3 were of Awolowo’s Action Group.

Fabricated lies. I just clicked on the link and realized this dude fraudulently cut and joined to tell half truth.

According to YOUR write up, Midwest agitations began in 1952.

Was Awolowo the Premier in 1952? grin Answer No

According to YOUR write up, Awolowo people marginalized the Midwesterners since 1952?

Was Awolowo people in control of the government in western region in 1952? Answer: NO

Was there even self rule in 1952? grin Answer: No

Who was in control of the government of Western region in 1952? British

Then, why did the midwest agitated before Awolowo people controlled the government?

Simply because Benin wanted to be on their own. They wanted self rule but British wanted the country together.

Awolowo even wanted out of Nigeria. He never hid this from the British. It was Azikiwe that resisted any attempt by Awolowo and Benin to clamor for separation.

Bros I feel your pain. I am Ikwerre and I vehemently oppose the notion that I am Igbo. My grandmother was an Igbo lady from Umuahia. When she was alive I tried to ask her if Ikwerre was Igbo with her experience and knowledge going by her age. She categorically told me Ikwerre was not Igbo. She said there was no time Ikwerre had accepted to be Igbo. Not before the war or after the war.
There are many ways Igbos can win the heart of these people that speak similar language and form a formidable front. It is far from annexation. That wont work. Before the war and when there was no idea of it even when the apparatchik of governance were fully under Igbo control in the Eastern Nigeria, Ikwerre in 1963 formed the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention.
First of all, Ikwerre is not Igbo. We have made this clear even before the civil war and that was why some Igbo accused Ikwerre of sabotage during the war. Second, in all efforts by the minorities in the former Eastern region to agitate for their own political, social and economic recognition and liberty in the Eastern region and Nigeria at large, Ikwerre participated fully: hence, the late Chief E. J. A. Oriji and others represented Ikwerre before and during most of the conferences set up to address the fears of the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria. Third, in May 1963, Ikwerre people formed the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention to state that Ikwerre is a distinct ethnic group from any others in Nigeria. Fourth, in the 1964/65 elections into the Federal House of Representatives, National Council of Nigeria and the Camerouns (NCNC) nominated an Igbo man named Mr. Eluguronu to represent Ikwerre in the House. Ikwerre rejected it and fielded young Nwobidike Nwanodi as an independent candidate and he won. Fifth, Ikwerre's participation in all the movements for the creation of COR and later Rivers States clearly shows Ikwerre's rejection of been Igbo.
