I think you need to read more about European history. Theirs was even worse.
Before they became world powers, they didn't just compete verbally or by writing, they hated themselves and they fought wars.
At least we are only debating, we are not fighting wars.
The advantage Europe had was that they had a religion that emphasized:

1) Going out into the world, all in the name of converting souls for their God. This meant they also got to be exposed to other societies and resources and sadly they also went all out to conquer for resources they didn't have.

2) The Religion was then later interpreted to mean that everyone (even to the least man) must read the bible for themselves to gain salvation. This increased their literacy rate several folds in 100 years. With the way our society takes religion seriously today, just imagine making knowledge of coding (for example) a prerequisite for escaping hell. Imagine how superior we would almost all become in the tech world compared to the rest of the world?

That was what happened with the reformation of the catholic church in the 16th century, beginning from Germany and then to England and France. It increased their literacy rate several folds and gave their societies the advantage.

Living in France doesn't mean you know history. Before Europe became France, England, and Germany of today, they were just societies called barbarians by the more civilised Romans. Those barbarians only thought about looting and fighting. Even African kingdoms and the Islamic Ottoman Empire (later on) were more civilised at a time.

My point is that: They've always competed even before they became powerful.
Their competition was not necessarily only because they saw themselves as the best in the world but also because they have been rival neighbours even when the Ottoman Empire and other kingdoms were better. I tried to paint history to buttress this point but it flew over his head.

The competition that existed between them because they wanted to out do each other led them to out do the likes of Germany and Spain.

They became the financial capitals of the world where wars were financed and a lot of inventions were commercialized.

Their bidding wars to win contracts were brutal and at a point nearly bankrupt France all because they wanted to show the UK that they were superior.

Germany was created due to a war in which Prussia gathered a bunch of Germanic states to fight alongside each other against France. After France was defeated, those countries came together as one under the monarch of Prussia. I think the crowning of the Prussian monarch was done in chateau de Versailles.

Anyways, this is just to say that you don't know what you are talking about. In the period of time in which you think France and England outshined Germany, Germany didn't actually exist. (Like many other local champions, you are unable to understand the concept of time).

When people want to pretend to be educated and they actually meet an educated person, it doesn't go very well for them.
