Growing up while reading government textbooks in secondary school , I was of the opinion that the French policy of assimilation in the French speaking regions of Africa is far more superior and beneficial to Africans than the British’s indirect rule .

Now all grown having access to different news articles , propaganda and media reports I somehow feel the French didn’t mean well for Africa at all compared to their British counterparts .

Looking at how militancy groups spring up in different French African countries the moment france feels they are losing grip of such country, how France just goes after it’s interests in those countries before anything all makes it feel like the French are really ruthless but nobody talks enough about them

The French assimilation policy was a system of neocolonialism which the French perfected and unleashed on Africa and Africans.

On the surface it appeared to be a policy that favoured Africans but in actuality it was a policy meant to perpetuate the dependence of Africans on the French.

They centralized rule in the hands of autocratic colonial administrators which answered directly to Dakar and Paris. Several outlying parts of French West Africa were stripped of their ability to build political institutions unlike British West Africa in which indirect rule, local politics, and self-rule prepared us for independence a bit better. The only problem was the way the British threw together dissimilar groups to form Nigeria.

The assimilation policy of the French was meant to turn Africans into Frenchmen and hopefully help to keep them as part of the French nation. Afterall, if you consider yourself French why would you try to break away. This is why Leopold Senghor the first President of Senegal called on Africans not to lose their negritude.

Post-independence the French continued their imperialistic tendencies by often interfering in the affairs of their ex-colonies, ostensibly to bring about peace but often engendering more chaos than existed previously.

If one studies French and British imperialism one would see that while Britain's actions are usually motivated by economic factors, France's actions can be motivated by economy, power, ego, or just because.

Tinubu Has a track record of rewarding those loyal to him till the end; they may not get ministerial appointments due to the rationing of slots per state but they will get some other appointments. For example FFK is from Osun state, the same state Tinubu's cousin Oyetola just lost re-election making him open for an appointment. FFK will certainly not get ministerial appointment ahead of Oyetola and other more level headed APC chieftains from the state.

It's just a gut feeling. But you are right. That's one thing you just have to commend Tinubu for. He lifts those around him, even if it's for negative intentions. He is a classic godfather.
