Much needed forex? Please explain why forex is much needed . Needed for what ?
To buy what they make with our gas?
We spend nearly 3 billion USD importing plastics
Is that rational? Guess what our biggest imports are ? Petrol
How much exactly. Do you project we can earn

Please explain why the Naira cannot belong to that class of phenomena known as. FOREX
Please explain why if we have more than enough gas MOST Nigerians dont cook with gas

Do you know how many years of gas we have or you just have the nebulous notion of "more than enough"

you are out of your intellectual depth here

You operate by assumption not thinking

My thing is simple

Let us satisfy our own need first
We should use our gas to make those things they make in Germany that we import
Paper,glass,industrial chemicals,metals
To that extent we must recognise they are strategic competitors not allies
They do not transfer knowledge because They are smart
We should see gas as a strategic commodity not something to be exchanged for so called FOREX

Which you do not understand is their only has value because they are productive and our Naira will never have meaning if we are not courageous enough to sell whatever we sell in Naira
We do not need forex
That is an illusion
What we need is industrialisation

Thanks.

Algeria has gas, so why would Algeria allow Nigeria to compete with it on its own land ?
This project looks stupid, who would even build the pipelines ? China ? Why would China do that? The pipelines are built to sideline Russia which is China's biggest ally.
It's just another white 🐘 project.
That pipeline may not go beyond Niger refuvlic

Which two industries consume the most gas

Chemical and petrochemical industries

Now if we have any sense we should know that a petrochemical industry in Europe is our strategic competitor if we are speaking diplomatically
A goat cannot be friends with a baby lion. It is its dinner.
Why should we help them?
Rather we should be seeking to relocate those industries not helping them with gas
and helping them grow to a point where We can never compete
We see the same thing in chocolate, coffee etc

Diamonds are mined in Africa and sold in Antwerp

We need leaders who see the big picture and think about Nigerians

I say without any doubt we should not be exporting gas to Europe

Our people perish for want of knowledge

Does every Nigerian have access to gas.

When we all have enough gas we can think of export
They don't have gas but cook with gas we have gas and cook with kerosene and firewood.

Irony.
Why at last? Why the celebration?
Have they piped gas to industries in Aba,Nnewi? When that happens we can say at last not celebrate putting our children's future in a pipe to Europe and our youths present at the same time

The more gas we USE the richer we will be. NOT the more we export

What do they use gas for in Europe is something every Nigerian kid must ask

If we don't ask that we deserve to be slaves for ever

Whatever they use gas for in Europe can we use it for the same in Nigeria Ghana Benin Cameroun.

Exporting gas is not foolish it is suicidal.

If Nigeria starts exporting more of those gases that it flares, it translates to more revenue/forex income for the country, a better value for the Naira, more jobs, more income for Nigerians, a reduction in environmental degradation in the Niger Delta etc.

If we calm down, it's more than obvious that this oil thing is not the way forward short term. If we choose to diversify the economy, there are low hanging fruits in the areas of agriculture and security that'll ease the pressure on the populace directly.

I'd rather we borrow money to improve our agriculture to feed ourselves than to build pipes. No be who chop bellefull go dey build pipe.

I'm out of my intellectual depth? ... I operate by assumption? ... Wow! ...and this is coming from a person who thinks that a struggling developing country doesn't need forex revenue.

Firstly you just claimed with so much confidence that a developing country like Nigeria doesnt need FOREX. The basis of your argument is that NIgeria should aim to be an exporting nation, not an importer. Are you aware that even China which is the biggest exporting nation in the world also needs forex? Are you aware that CHina, the biggest exporting nation in the world also has the largest forex reserve of any country on the planet which runs into trillions of dollars? By your logic, you must think the Chinese are fools for having such a massive reserve right?

Other powerful economies like the UK, France, Germany, Japan etc with far far bigger economies than yours also need forex earnings to meet relevant trade liabilities and to influence monetary policy, because no country is an economic island in isolation. But going by your level of intelligence these countries are also foolish for needing forex and for having substantial forex reserves right?

You argue that Nigeria, a struggling developing nation doesn't need forex and doesnt need foreign revenue; you also confidently posit that what Nigeria need is industrialisation. But how do you think industrialisation happens?

You sound like a person who's read too many fantasy economics comics and is now sunken into deep delusion; totally disconnected from reality. You think industries just grow like magic out of the ground like trees would sprout from the soil? Aren't you aware that money is needed for industrialisation? And where exactly would that money come from? You want to wake up one day and have an industrialised country overnight?

A poor man thinks only of food and his belly. A rich man knows that if he develops his business and earns good money, he can buy anything he wants (including foods) with the money he has and he will never go hungry...

You say you'd rather borrow money and improve agriculture to feed instead of building a pipe. As for me, I would rather do both cos building that pipe would give me the money which can in-turn be used to improve agriculture, or even to quickly pay off the loan used to develop agriculture.... None of these projects is more or less important than the other and no sector has to suffer while we develop the others.

In otherwords, a developed agricultural sector can earn Nigeria billions of dollars, but that isnt a reason why Nigeria should abandon developing its export and local infrastructure for gas which can also earn the country billions of dollars.

Facts and figures not rant and polemic
We do not need forex from selling commodities
Rather we must focus only on products to which we add value
What do we need forex for simple question you are writing a Phd
We use forex for consumption mainly not production .
1. Petrol 2. Cars. 3. Wheat our top three imports.
That is not enough reason to build a pipeline to Europe
Our people do not have the purchasing power to buy foreign goods. That is why we import second hand clothes and waste electronic /white goods

Gas is the cheapest source of energy and we do not make anything of significance from it net.
Rather we are locked in to forward contacts which favour the oil majors and their home country We make more from Diaspora remittances than anything else.
More from Diaspora remittances in one year than gas in 10 years
The only way we can benefit from gas is to use it to industrialise

And how do you industrialise without money?.. where does the money to industrialise come from? By continuing with the burning of $25million worth of gas monthly in flares?

Anyway, I dont think I have it in me to argue with an economic 'genius' who believes countries like China, Japan, Germany, UK, Brazil, Korea and several others are foolish for scrambling for forex income.

What is money? Forex?

You are out of your depth here
What you need to industrialize is knowledge not "money" which you have superficial understanding of
We have a knowledge deficit not a money deficit.
We have all the resources we need to industrialize in Africa what we lack is human capital with knowledge . We cannot build a hydroelectric plant by ourselves with all the money in the world today 2023
Fiat money is not a sine qua non
The dollar is not any more "money" than the Naira what makes the difference is what our people lack in knowledge .We can hardly build a 7 storey building without collapse
So we need to boost our knowledge
If we double our internal usage of gas every year in 10 years we will be doing fine without exporting to Europe

Okay thanks. I've learnt a few weird things from you today:
1. Nigeria doesnt need forex.
2. Nigeria doesnt need money to industrialise, we only need knowledge.

I guess you're right, my education is probably useless. You're actually smarter than every country in the world that seeks forex and keeps a forex reserve. As for Nigeria, if your fantastic ideas are adopted by the leadership of this country, we would surely survive without forex even if it means becoming a pariah state and even if the Naira drops to like N1million/$.

Ahh! And to add to that, we would use 'knowledge' and not money to develop our industries and critical infrastructure.

No further arguments!

Algeria exports gas to Europe, but the demand of gas is far more than Algeria can meet. Algeria would be very happy to receive Nigerian gas for onward export to Europe. It's good business!
So if you have a shop in which you sell biscuit and the demand is higher than the supply, you go and ask a competitor to come and share your shop with you ?
My friend, if demand is higher than supply then the price will keep growing until demand equals supply, it's great business to not invite a competitor to share your shop with you.
Plus any such pipeline will be at the mercy of mercenary/terrorist groups in Niger and Algeria.
And the amount of money you would need to give Algeria to make it worth it for Algeria to let you set shop in its country (as a competitor) would make the business not worth it to you. The only people who could gain from this are the Algerians and the Europeans.
This would provide an other reason for the EU to meddle in Nigerian politics...
And Russia will definitely find a way to destroy those pipelines (by the way, Algeria is an ally of Russia)...

There are other markets to sell gas, no need to try and stab Russia in the back for a few dollars or to "prove loyalty" to the west. Try and start thinking for your own interests and stop being a slave.

Your "education" is worse than useless. It is malevolent

What you have not learnt is That you are the one who is weird
You don't know nowt but fancy yourself an intellectual
A double tragedy

Be assured you know less than 10% what you think know
And you are calcified in your thinking

You think you know what money is that is where you should start because you have no clue.
You don't know and don't realize you don't but you believe you do.
Government creates "money" by fiat it is not a physical reality like the power on your phone battery.
If a country is huge with natural resources and a knowledge rich population it does not need FOREX
NOT NEEDING. forex does not mean ZERO FOREX or your silly hyperbole of becoming a pariah state
We are talking of selling gas
which you have no clue about the numbers
I told you
We get more forex in one year from diasporans than we get from gas in ten years
We would benefit more using that gas
At home than selling it for money the average Nigerian only hears about audio
International trade is a zero sum game and. It comes to balance of trade.
Having a positive or negative balance does not being a winner or loser.
It is more nuanced
