You can change that via settings on your end.

I hate it so much. I'm not a type that saves people's number. So if i want to contact such people that that forgot to save his/her number again, I will use our previous chat to know who is who especially if the person did not use real face as dp. I don't always understand while whatsapp will clear my chat without consent from both sides, since the chat was already end to end encrypted.
