Now, what about those of them working in the private sectors, like private school teachers, how would they survive? How will the government help them? Ain't they Nigerians as well? It's always about civil servants! |

Allocations to States will increase massively from next month so really, most states should be able increase salaries by some amount and start clearing any backlog of unpaid salaries. 1 Like |

Kukutenla: 1. Unfortunately, I don't think the minimum wage will rise by more than N10,000 - N12,000. Who knows, may be up to N20k. 2. Federal government is not responsible for paying employees of States. Even if the Federal government increases minimum wage, it is up to States to pay or not pay. The good news though (if you can call it that) is that from next month, due to the merging of the exchange rates, State's share of revenue accruing from oil revenues will increase massively. That should enable States to pay increased salaries. |

Kukutenla: Inflation brought about by the lifting of the oil subsidy is benign rather than malign. The markets reacted positively to it by boosting stocks on the NSE. 1 Like |

If the minimum wage is increased to N100,000 as the NLC is asking for, it will pull up wages in the private sector also. In the end, we will find ourselves in an inflation spiral which will harmer the value of Naira. Naira to USD rate in excess of N1, 200 will be starring us in the face. Prices of basic foods and everything else will shoot up - average loaf of bread could easily cost N2,000. So, the benefit of increasing salaries to N100K will be lost anyway as new inflation will reduce the new value of that N100, 000 to about current N30,000. Please read about the Udoji Commission salary increase of the 70s or 80s and see what happened to prices in Nigeria. So, it is a choice between the devil - modest salary increases, or the deep sea - NLC-type increase. In truth, capitalism is rigged against workers. It mostly benefits those at the top. |

UzorIyke:the Igbo governors love there citizen by increasing there salary by 10k. The reason why Nigeria is this back ward is because of we the citizens. The moment we put our tribal bigotry away, that is when we would start seeing a better Nigeria |
