Vacate University, if you’re not a professional — ESUT VC tells academic staff

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has made it compulsory that every staff of the university must be a registered member of one professional body or the other before such staff would be allowed to continue occupying positions in the institution.

To enforce the order, the university said that henceforth there would be no more promotion for any staff who is not a registered member of a professional association, noting also that henceforth any professor who does not engage in international conferences or workshops for research would be stagnated in his or her position.


Going forward too, reluctant professors who don’t attend research courses would no longer supervise postgraduate students in Nigeria’s pioneer University of Science and Technology.

The directives were disclosed, on Wednesday, by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Aloysius M. Okolie, during the 2023 Annual International Conference of ESUT School of Postgraduate Studies, with the theme: “Enhancing and Strengthening the Capacities of Research Supervision in Universities.”

Prof Okolie lamented that some lecturers stop research activities once they become professors, noting that such academic conferences and workshops were intellectual harvests, a career review and an avenue for interface with other colleagues.

“I had told Deans to always have intellectual harvests; Town and Gown should also be harvested for the benefit of the university. Any Dean that is not academically conscious will be removed, you must be a member of a professional association or you don’t get a promotion, you must have proof of being a registered member of a professional association. Any professor that does not attend conferences for research will henceforth be stagnated and will no longer supervise PG students,” Okolie said.

Chairman of the conference, Dr. Jeff Nnamani lamented the obvious lack of professionalism in Nigeria society, noting that the topic for the conference called for a deeper thought.

Nnamani identified lack of funding as a major challenge in university education and research, stating that university funding should not be beggarly.

The Conference host and Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Prof Sam Ugwu emphasized that the essence of University education and scholarship was hinged on teaching and research, noting that research was a veritable instrument or barometer for re-engineering the socio-economic and political directions of societies when its outcomes are adequately utilized.

Ugwu said that one of the reasons for the international conference was that for decades, the qualities of postgraduate theses/dissertations have failed national and global standards, giving most stakeholders in academia much concern.

Is it that the school is a glorified secondary school where there's no Senate/ Governing Council but has only a school Principal talking down on his academic staff? I understand his complaint about lazy academics and ,sadly, that he is now forced to act but those complaints should not even be allowed in the first place if the Senate/Governing Council knows and does its job. Those lazy bad eggs should have been sacked instead of being allowed to produce their likes who go out of school as illbaked products of mediocre mentors.

This is very uncomfortable and belittled that school. None of the first generation universities VC will address his colleagues in this manner. VC can quote the decision of the university senate and appeal for compliance, not threatening them in his personal capacity and using his office.

This is a glorified Secondary school and it's a sad reality that this school is not the only one. The other day I read of 'universities' with part time VCs! NUC should monitor these glorified Secondary schools abeg. Check my signature for free stuffs!

That's not dictatorship but enforcing of basic rules of their trade.
As a professor research must be embraced and not just dissemination of some stale lecture note.

Some Profs. are so lax, they don't to self-improve anymore... na only to de intimidate undergraduate and just de buga with title of Prof.

Nice one by Mr VC....you want to know why many Professors are still using stone age techniques The answer is above qoute. They are too comfortable, to egoistic to learn new developments..hence, they give their students very tough time.

Na wa.....But that's the truth.... Majority of these universities staffs ain't professional at all....They are products of favouritism.....Naam know man dey kill most of sectors for this country.

Many Nigerians didn't support Buhari not because they hate him as a person but because he didn't improve him since he left power as military head of state, how can a man who since 1984 depended only on his military pension improve your economy and life when
1. he didn't add any new qualifications like Obasanjo and Gowon who became PHD holders after leaving office
2. He didn't write any book like Obasanjo, Ojukwu, Babangida etc
3. didn't establish a foundation like TY Danjuma even if its to help Almajiris in the north.
4. Didn't establish nor belong to a board of a corporate organisation
5. didn't become a mediator for AU or ECOWAS as former head of state
and you espect rational people to support such a person as their president.
6. even as traditional pastoralist didn't increase his number of cattle beyond what we saw in his asset declaration.

As per Tinubu the major concern was that he is seen as physically not too strong (now his health is improving to God be the glory) contesting at a time a better candidate entered the race not that those who didn't vote for him hated him after all he was very kind to every tribe as governor and belongs to board of several companies and has improved himself politically over the years

Very true, Prof Okolie of UNN very intelligent stubborn man and can be a bit arrogant.

He is right though, most lecturers deliberately don't update themselves, they remain stagnant and comfortable in their limited knowledge, thereby affecting the quality of education their students recieve.
