TOBILOBA2023: It is highly unprofessional to call someone on Whatsapp, unless you have the person's permission. Consider the following: 1. If the receiver doesn't have an active data bundle how do they receive your call? 2. Even if the person has a bundle but doesn't switch on the mobile data/ WiFi, how do you connect? 3. Whatsapp consumes the data of both the caller and the receiver so each time you call, you're basically making the receiver spend money on the call and if it doesn't bring money into their pocket, it's a loss for them. 4. Whatsapp is not a primary calling platform, it's internet based and not all phones have internet facilities, take tiny nokia phones as examples. Based on the above, you need to re-examine yourself as a potential caller and ask yourself if you're serious about the call or not. Do not stress people if you know you need to talk. Respect yourself and buy airtime to make serious calls. Shalom. 3 Likes |

Adaorababy: If the person doesn't have an active data bundle or doesn't switch it on, or peradventure the person uses a phone that has no internet (like tiny phones), what happens in that case? Serious people don't call on whatsapp, especially for the first time. I like the part where u said they need to ask for permission though. 1 Like |

BeardedmeatR: So I've seen a couple of your responses and thought to engage. Personally, I think it's highly unprofessional for the first business contact to be a whatsapp call. I will never (and this is my personal opinion) answer anyone, even Tony Elumelu or Femi Otedola if their first contact is a whatsapp call. But there's a caveat to this. If the business I work with has provided me an official number which they also registered on WhatsApp and have whatsapp as one of their valid means of communication, I will engage any and every whatsapp call to that official number. My personal number is exclusively for my private communications and my WhatsApp is more specifically for contacts with family and friends. If someone with an unknown number initiates a chat with me on WhatsApp to introduce themselves and then request to call over whatsapp, that's perfectly fine. But if their first contact to my personal whatsapp is a phone call, I'm never going to respond to that call. Whatsapp recently introduced a privacy feature to Silence unknown callers and I have that turned on 3 Likes |

Whatsapp calls are interrupted when you have an actual call coming through, there are also issues with call clarity because of internet signal fluctuations. Couple this with the fact that whatsapp is still perceived as a form of social media and you begin to see why it may not be the best platform for hosting critical business calls. In a formal business environment, the cost of the call should not be an issue. I worked internationally within corporate structures and this is my observation. 1 Like |

TOBILOBA2023:Not proper especially for the first time. Keep in mind that the receiver also needs to use data to communicate with you while you are trying get business from him/her. Besides, it portrays your company as a less privileged organisation who is just managing resources with a lot of inefficiencies. And it also means as a business, you cant afford airtime for business calls. I really do not think it's an issue of modern or archaic person , its about biz communication values and ethics. Rather, manage to raise airtime and communicate to establish some familiarity or the first , try to understand if the person wouldnt mind Whatsapp calls or chats in your subsequent communications and you will be good to go. Adaorababy: It's a means of communication. We have to move away from some ideologies. Most calls from outside Nigeria these days initiate either from Zoom, Teams or WhatsApp (if you supply your mobile number to them). Most corporations now incorporate WhatsApp API to their site. Personally I no longer load airtime more than NGN500/month to call granny over voice. Any other person is WhatsApp. We are not quick to adapt, that's our major problem and then some of us sit on a high horse. 1 Like |

dfrost:The bolded part is not official. If you have ever worked in a well structured oraginsation, you will agree with those wo say its unprofessional. Most people shouting there is nothing worng, i bet you have little or no knowldge of how standard organisations work. Besides, Whatsapp API is mostly not for calls, there are for things likes sending and recieveing of transaction reports via whatsapp platform, chats etc. calls may be ,but the least on the list of reasons for API integrations. I have handled quite a number of such integrations for some businesses. |
Re: Is It Unprofessional To Use Whatsapp For Official/business Calls? by dfrost: 11:53am On Jul 18, 2023 |
RealEzee: Thank you for this. Large corps don integrate WhatsApp API, some still dey reason like cavemen ππ€£. Buzzed someone on WhatsApp to pass information, the young lady was practically rude. I laughed and told her 'sorry madam'. She later discovered who was behind the initial communication and was singing apologies like a canary. I wasn't even angry. And I corrected her by asking her if she has all the numbers in the world, she said no. Then there is always a first time to reach out, whether via WhatsApp or not. 1 Like |
