As a professional accountant, I struggle to understand what he/she is trying to say.
You do not deduct or add Pension and nhf before you get your gross income, your gross income is your gross income! You are required to take pension, nhf and consolidated allowance as deductions from gross income to arrive at your taxable income which is not subjected to the graduated tax rates to arrive at your paye.

Pls help to give a breakdown of PAYE calculations
I meant how is it determined

Please do, they will appreciate it

Lol! The management know what they are doing! It's a grand fraud game a lot of SMEs play. The unpaid deductions from employees will never be remitted to government. The amount of money they make in failing to declare and remit those deductions is way in excess of whatever they are paying in "over-tax"

The most senseless post I have seen here...how could pointing out an anomaly in the very department he is employed not be his business...Op was employed as an accountant for a purpose he is no robot...even robots think and proffer solutions nowadays with the advent of AI.

You should be advising him on how best to report the issue and not capping careless.

Let him go ahead , shey u will be there for him when real matter starts?

Be very careful, I would suggest you ask your superior questions, I didn't say you should tell them of your discovery, ask them questions surrounding your discovery. These sort of frauds are usually management deep, don't get caught on the wrong side of corporation politics.

I am as well confused here. The supposed affected accountshould be the PAYE liability. I wonder how the gross income comes in

@Op follow this advice
Oblongata:
Consider these 3 reasons!

1)You don't know if the anomaly is a fraud and designed to benefit someone! You must firstly ensure you investigate and report your findings (if any) to the owner directly.
2) You don't want to seem like 'I Too Know' to the rest of your co workers as you are new. Be patient and watchful, and know the right time to act and who to report to!
3) You can intimate the auditors to put it in their RTM.

@OP
I will advise you to do small audit trail by looking at the previous tax receipts which is a monthly payment to check whether the money deducted from the staffs is the actual remitted amount to the state government.
Look at these possible outcomes:
If the cumulative amount (PAYE) deducted is what was remitted to the state government, you have a very good point, then report to the management to do the right thing and prepare a revised PAYE to claim tax credit, if possible, from the state government.
If the cumulative amount (PAYE) deducted is not what was remitted to the state government, you need to tread with caution to report this as it may be an instruction from the management or the owner. Try and carry out your immediate boss along with your findings to know which way to go

Every company rewards people who save them money. Make sure you have everything properly detailed then meet with the boss.

This is the kind of thing that gets people promoted. However, how is it the previous accountant or consultant missed this?

Good question!
My guess, he or she knew about it and play along, also benefit from it.

He or she knew about it, and kept shut because of those involved

The list goes on....

It may have been an honest error by the past accountant but please look well and be very sure of your facts before you raise an alarm to your direct supervisor undecided

Nothing like not remitting the correct tax to the government. I believe they don't know what they are doing. When the tax authority comes for audit, they usually request for all the book of records. You have nothing to hide unless the people are learner which is usually not the case.

If it would be to the better gain of the company, then they would agree..

But if not, then they would reject your idea.

Then again, if it would be to the better gain of the company, and they didn't still buy the idea (even shun you down),, then the person in charge knew about it, and had been siphoning it constantly and frequently at the end of each months payments.

Call the attention of Management to it by preparing the correct salaries and deductions. Let your documents speak for itself. Make sure the Tax regulations booklets that backed your position is available.

They employed as a professional and kindly give professional advice. As new a staff try to set a standard for yourself by being professional in all your dealings.

If you mind your business then you don't know your job cos if you keep silent, these same people will fault your expertise which might affect your job and your future recommendations.if they are not ready to have an experienced accountant then they should get the bleep off.
Don't keep shut tell the CEO but try and read the body language so you won't be exposing the infractions to the same people who caused it.
Finally, if your life is threatened, leave
God's blessings on you!

Good day, fellow,
This question will guide my further response(s).
Is there an accountant before you?
Is he/she still there or has left the coy?

If there is accountant and he/she still there, discuss with him/her first. It might probably be that he/she is not aware of the rules/principles of Taxation in respect to pension.
If you go ahead to report it without informing him/her you are automatically sending him/her parking, which you may not like. Let him/her bring it to the management notice.
Or in alternative, just change the workings to reflect the correct position after discussion between the two of you.

If you are the only accountant, then go ahead and report it, that is why you were employed.
Your role is also advisory.
You may as well change the workings to reflect the correct position without telling anyone. If they discovered it themselves, you will offer explanation on why the changes.

Best regards.
